Youtube Depends on Ads to work (poptalk.scrubbles.tech)

Seriously launched the app (by accident today) and what is this? They're trying to play the victim from the big bad ad blockers saying all they're doing is trying to show an ad at the beginning of video, and then I see all of this crap.

This was after a non-skippable ad at the beginning followed by a totally real "survey" that it wanted me to fill out, one interruption so far in the content, and now three ads on the screen. That's 45% of the screen dedicated to ads. Freaking ridiculous. "But please turn off your ad blocker".

Google, currently embroiled in an anti-trust lawsuit for having too much control over the internet, is pleading poverty. How amusing.

[-] N200L@lemmy.world 19 points 7 months ago

Aw come on, Google is just a little down on their luck is all. Besides they only made close to $300,000,000,000 this year. Barely enough to put food on the table! /s

Nikel and dime till it's a crime

[-] mateomaui@reddthat.com 32 points 7 months ago

Up to 80% of the screen without causing seizures!

Ads pay miniscule amounts per view.. I've heard it said the £12/month sub is about hundreds of times what they get from ad revenue per user. So they spam them everywhere.. the more ads the better.

Which means people block the ads because they're obnoxious, and they make nothing..

[-] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 37 points 7 months ago

which in turn makes them add more ads, which makes more people block them, which makes them add more ads... and the cycle continues.

Honestly if they stuck, and I mean actually stuck to "You know what, one ad, beginning of the video, unskippable, and the rest of the video (and content below, and everything) will be ad free until you start a new video - I'd do it. I'd honestly be okay with that. But it's just so overbearing, everywhere is meant to draw your eye to ads, so no, I'll do everything I can to get around them.

[-] Pika@sh.itjust.works 15 points 7 months ago

Or if they went back to their old advertisement model, remember when you used to get in line advertisements that played at the bottom of the video. I remember those they weren't intrusive to the video content and you still saw them. It wasn't obnoxious as hell and I would bd ok with that

Those inclined things drove me nuts. Might be a cultu thing in terms of how tv works.

I have seen recordings of American tv where things like that would advertise the next show so I guess people got stained to mote or less ignore them.

It's not a thing that caught on here. At least not while I still had a tv.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago

That's one of the reasons I'm ok paying for premium. Creators get paid more.

[-] RooPappy@kbin.social 12 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Or you could pay for Nebula instead of the company causing the problem. Or you could contribute to their Patreon.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago

I could if the people I watched weren't on YouTube.

[-] FrostyPolicy@suppo.fi 2 points 7 months ago

+1 for Nebula

[-] 1rre@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 7 months ago

Depends on the ad and how much you use the premium...

I've watched so much they would've absolutely made more money showing me ads (based on my best guess for how much margin they should make on ads, which I think I can estimate pretty well, vs premium as I know less about costs etc. there) but I guess it's not the case for everyone

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 22 points 7 months ago

Well, since they started with this adblock shame nonsense, I can tell you that my ad revenue has been in steady decline, despite views being the same or higher than before this racketeering went into effect.

So whatever they think they're doing is backfiring on content creators.

Google literally has to ruin everything it touches by constantly trying to change things.

[-] Synthead@lemmy.world 21 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Firefox and uBlock works great, here. Not only do you not get ads, but it cuts down on the tracking and metrics a lot, too. Oh, and you can play stuff in the background. You know, because you own your devices and you can do whatever client side stuff you want, right?

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 7 months ago

if you're on android do yourself the favour of downloading Newpipe Sponsorblock and just import your subscriptions.

[-] lichtmetzger@feddit.de 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

If you're on a ~~rooted~~ Android, ReVanced is a great option. It patches the YT app to behave like Premium, removes a lot of annoyances and integrates SponsorBlock and the Dislike API.

[-] dingus@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

You don't at all need to root your phone to run ReVanced. You can easily patch and install without root.

[-] lichtmetzger@feddit.de 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Ah, so that's probably only needed when you use the rename app feature? Because it complained about microG missing after launching the YT app with the default patch selection so I had to use the mount installation method, which requires root (I think).

Good to know!

[-] dingus@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

It's been a while before I had to reinstall. I think the MicroG .APK is maybe is installed separately from ReVanced?? Sorry I can't remember. But yeah you haven't ever needed root to use it.

[-] iturnedintoanewt@lemm.ee 2 points 7 months ago

The sponsor block part doesn't quite work for me

How much of it have you watched in recent years? What happened on the episodes you watched?

It sure is funny how many people that haven't actually watched the show since like season 6 still sound off about it like they have any idea what its currently like.

[-] Pandemanium@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

I've tried. Marge's voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Most of the voice actors are so old they don't sound like the characters at all anymore. At least they stopped doing the trendy celebrity guest of the week on every episode.

Haven't watched the show in years but according to the video there are more standout episodes in recent years - he actually made me want to watch the new season.

[-] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 2 points 7 months ago

I think is Ok, I really liked the episode of Marge accepting that Baby Bart is growing up. The NFT/Snowpiercer part of the Halloween special was also good.

[-] deweydecibel@lemmy.world 0 points 7 months ago

Maybe try some episodes and see for yourself?

YouTuber 20 minute opinion drops, sorry, "video essays" are a dime a dozen and the vast majority have nothing notable to say. Better to just try things for yourself and make up your own mind.

[-] EmhyrVarEmreis@lemm.ee 6 points 7 months ago

I feel extremely uncertain because there are still people who don't use Vanced

[-] leekleak@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago
[-] derfl007@lemmy.wtf 1 points 7 months ago

there is youtube++, haven't tried it because i have an android, but it should have a lot of the features of vanced. And with iOS16 finally (kind of) allowing third party apps, it's not even that hard to install

[-] GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml 0 points 7 months ago

Unforced error ngl

[-] RooPappy@kbin.social 3 points 7 months ago

SmartTube Next as well.

[-] RIP_Cheems@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago

I got youtube revanced the moment youtube started playing an ad every 2 minutes. Not even exaggeration either, literally every 2 minutes.

[-] camelbeard@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

That was probably a year ago it's every 12 seconds now, unskippable 3 minute ads.

[-] RIP_Cheems@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago
[-] waka@feddit.de 2 points 7 months ago

That's horrible. Moved from vanced to revanced the moment it was properly working with the manager tool. Had the chance to look at the stock app a couple of days ago. It's not even about the ad-blocking anymore. The stock app is borderline unusable.

Also fun fact: Youtube managed to pull off a cobra-effect with their recent fight on adblocking. That was a fun realisation when I heard of that.

[-] AnonTwo@kbin.social 5 points 7 months ago

That was a good Super Eyepatch Wolf vid.

[-] zepheriths@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

To be honest even without ad block most of the videos I watch have almost no ads. Probably because of the type of humor involved but still. Doesn't hurt to had the ad-blocker

[-] hornedfiend@sopuli.xyz 5 points 7 months ago

I can't even tell the difference between components. It's a very confusing ui.

[-] Kushia@lemmy.ml 3 points 7 months ago

Okay then show the ads to the majority of people who accept them by not running any blockers and leave me alone.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 0 points 7 months ago
