In the past, laminated glass was usually installed in the windshield, with side and rear windows being tempered only.

The difference is that tempered glass is per-stressed so that when it cracks, it shatters into many tiny and dull pieces. Laminated is the same thing, but with layers of plastic sandwiched with layers of tempered glass. Laminated glass will still shatter, but will be held together by the plastic layers.

In an emergency, small improvised, or purpose built tools meant to shatter tempered glass will be useless if the glass is laminated.

There's a cool government program that trains and gets people jobs. They give people Housing, Basic Medical Care, Meals, Books, an Allowance, Clothing, and a Network of instructors and peers.

It targets low-income young adults ages 16 through 24. Check it out, share it around to people who need it. It seems pretty unknown.

Why YSK: I had this experience this morning. I was raging because the "alt + tab" shortcut had changed on my work computer when it worked fine yesterday. Now it opened the task view, but wouldn't switch windows unless I clicked on a different program.

I figured either windows had rolled out some new "feature" or the IT department had changed something without telling anyone. I kept trying different google searches but couldn't find anyone talking about my specific issue. Tried restarting, changing "multitasking" settings, editing the registry.

Finally some old post prompted me to try "windows + tab" and that worked. I discovered the windows and alt tab had been switched. So I tried a different keyboard and it worked fine. Finally I learned that my main keyboard has a "Windows" layout and a "Mac" layout, and somehow I had accidentally switched them.

So I wasted a bunch of time, got upset and was mentally blaming others when the issue was on my end. And one sign I could have used to realize that was that apparently in the whole world of internet search results I was the only one experiencing the issue.

[YSK] There is a Firefox extension that redirects Youtube videos to Peertube

I promise I'm not shilling for any of these companies.

I use the gluten free mix because of Celiac. We doubled the water and cheese and used it as batter in our stuffed waffle maker, filled with soft set scrambled eggs and more cheddar cheese. We used a heaping 1/2 cup of batter each for the top and bottom filling. The batter rises pretty quickly once it hits the cooking surface, so we'd press it back down as we were adding the fillings. It takes about 10 minutes to cook.

The mix comes with a herbed butter mix. After the waffle is cooked, we opened the maker, slathered each side of the waffle in the herbed butter, and closed it up again for about thirty seconds to let it cook in.

It's a perfect 5/7, highly recommended.

For the past two years, legitimate job postings on Indeed and Glassdoor have been replaced by scams. If you're tricked, the scammers aren't satisfied with your contact info in your CV, they reach out via email to request that you connect on an encrypted messenger app where they can privately scam you out of thousands in pre-hire "fees."

Applicants now have to add vetting job postings to their repertoire, which adds time and effort to an already stressful process. Things like researching the supposed company in need of labor, and digging into reports against them.

Protect yourself and assume any job posting is fake until proven otherwise. In the US, you should report any scams you became aware of.

These places are federally funded by our taxes, so they should be able to answer questions and help guide you to whatever your best options are, even if that includes helping you find remote work with out-of-state employers.

I've been working as an automation technician for around 5 years now, and I've come across several services that promise a substantial improvement in energy efficiency when it comes to heating, especially involving district heating with water. Most of these are subscription services.

While they usually quote numbers that are based in reality, the way they are accomplished is often covered in technical jargon and straight up BS that a person without experience won't be able to understand and so believes the seller.

That's where this post comes in.

All that the impressive sounding, weather pattern considering, ultra-futuristic solution really does is take the existing setpoint for the heating system and lowers it by ≈2°C. That's it. One line of code. Takes any competent professional 5 minutes to implement. What's worse, some systems are laid on top of the old one, with a higher priority. Meaning that you need a specialist provided by the "optimization" company to adjust the heating. So if you're too cold or too hot, tough shit. Your building's maintenance company can't change it.

The existing system in most cases already bases its setpoints on the current outside temperature, with a pollrate of around a second. What the weather is going to be like next week, or even tomorrow, does not matter. The system already adjusts the setpoints in real time.

Maybe a bit of a niche rant, but hopefully helps at least someone. Thanks for reading!

This is a pretty neat feature which is unknown for some reason. For example, in the Lemmy frontend, you can "speak as mod" which basically distinguishes your comment from others. It highlights it, pins it to the top of the comment section and also adds a red shield next to your username.

Try it by commenting in a post as mod, click on the three dots on your comment and click on the shield on the right.

Flushing it out from the outside with a bucket of hot water and a pump similar to this one ^2^ will melt the ice and open up the drain and you will get heat again.

^1^ Day because if your freezing weather lasts much longer than that, your homebuilder probably engineered a house that could handle the cold. Unfortunately my house was built by southern rednecks who'd never heard of insulation.

Prisoner's dilemma is a problem commonly featured in game theory. Each player is given an option to be either nice or nasty. Each combination of player plays multiple number of rounds. When tested against different strategies, it is found that the best performing strategies are :

• nice first ( they don't start the provoking),
• retaliatory (when opponent is nasty they also resond nasty),
• forgiving (they don't hold grudges),
• clear (their strategies are clear for opponent to interpret) and
• generous (when the opponent has been nasty, they do not retaliate 10℅ of the time )

When a potato cooks, the starches contained in each cell are released as the cell walls break down. These starches absorb the potato's internal moisture and swell and soften. These two processes are what transform a raw, hard potato into a cooked, softer potato fit for mashing.

If you cut your potatoes up before boiling them, the starches absorb the internal potato moisture as well as the water in which they're being boiled. If they boil for too long, they absorb too much water and your mashed potatoes will become gummy. The difference between perfectly cooked potato pieces and soggy pieces can sometimes be as little as a minute or two.

An easy workaround is to boil potatoes whole. They'll take a bit longer to cook but you can leave them in the hot water after boiling without undesirable effects, keeping them warm until it's time to mash them. I start my potatoes boiling as soon as I begin cooking and mash them immediately before dinner.

If they need more moisture, you can add a bit of hot potato boiling water or another liquid. This way, you have more control of their moisture content.

It's refreshing to see a major news outlet discussing collateral damage and not just resistance. Over the past decade, 99% of the time antibiotic overuse is covered and warned about it's always only in regards to resistance.

It's a good article that also doesn't spread the common misinformation of "just take some probiotics and fermented foods after antibiotics and you're good to go".

Swallowing an antibiotic is like carpet-bombing the trillions of microorganisms that live in the gut, killing not just the bad but the good too, said Dr. Martin Blaser, author of the book “Missing Microbes” and director of the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine at Rutgers University.

“I think the health profession in general has systematically overestimated the value of antibiotics and underestimated the cost,” Dr. Blaser said.

No shit. And it has spread like a virus to the general populace as well. The majority of people seem mentally addicted to antibiotics and think they're going to die if they don't get an antibiotic for every minor issue.

• Find out if you really need an antibiotic.
• Ask for the shortest course.
• Rethink probiotics.

I appreciate the NYT for finally helping spread this.

Just yesterday people on Lemmy were cheering about AI discovering new antibiotics. When I shared info about the concerns of collateral damage, the responses were more unintelligent and close-minded than on reddit. Extremely depressing.

Tldr; Wet newspaper dipped in ashes.

So, the other day I had to clean out the fireplace, and ofc the fireplace window(glass) was rather dirty. Tried for a while to get rid of it with paper, then scrubbing it off with a one-time-use sponge etc.. nothing gave any good results.

Then, I came across this random video online of a woman who said to use wet newspaper dipped in ashes from the stove, and start scrubing - This works like a charm! Forget all expensive chemicals and soaps to do this job, just KISS! Keep-it-simple-stupid.

Please give this a go next time you have to clean your wood-burning stove.
