Any allegations that Greene is transparently working as a Russian agent are entirely unsubstantiated.

In all seriousness, it seems like a disproportionate chunk of the time that I see a House member doing something wacky, its from Georgia.

Some years back, I remember discussions about the US reinforcing the Guam garrison, and Hank Johnson in Congressional hearings saying that he was worried that Guam was going to tip over and capsize.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cesSRfXqS1Q

He's still in office up there, but he's at least pretty laid back. He replaced Cynthia McKinney, who was definitely not laid back and infamous for her own brand of conspiracy craziness (other end of the political spectrum from Marjorie Taylor Greene, but wacky as well).

There has got to be something in the water in northern Georgia, because the "House Representative going bonkers" quota is pretty disproportionately represented in the news that I've seen out of there.

And it's not because I'm in Georgia or thereabouts and just seeing local political spatting -- this is stuff that makes national news.

Have we checked all the voters for hookworm?

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What are you, some kind of socialist? If we start giving people free tests, they'll be asking for free treatment next!

[–] HonkTonkWoman@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago

Next thing you know, they’ll insist we check all the hookers for voteworm too!

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemm.ee 11 points 2 months ago

Florida gets a lot of shit but our neighbors to the north are fuckin weird man. Atlanta and Savannah are cool but the rest of Georgia can get fucked

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

Hank was a good guy overall, but the tipping over thing remains possibly the absolute stupidest thing I've ever heard anyone say. Its just so damn stupid.

She barely won her seat during a year that Republicans were going to "win big". No way she holds on in 2024.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 39 points 2 months ago

We've been through our share of "no way"s.

[–] negativenull@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I think you are thinking of Boebert in Colorado. I think Greene is in a very safe seat.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Boebert ... Greene

Wait, aren't those the same person who occasionally dons glasses and changes her wig/nametag?

[–] randon31415@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Wait, that is Bobert? Drat I thought that was this one.

There’s no Republican challenger, so it’s between her and a Democrat in a sparsely populated Republican district. Don’t hold your breath.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Was it Green or another psycho that won because their supporters harassed the opponent so badly that it ruined his marriage and he dropped out?

[–] KnightontheSun@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

I have not checked, is there a viable candidate running against her? Any candidate running against her? Isn't her district insanely red?

[–] Ashyr@sh.itjust.works 64 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (6 children)

I’ll be curious if the democrats step in. Johnson did the right thing getting the bill passed, but he’s still a garbage human being and a terrible leader.

[–] PumpkinEscobar@lemmy.world 36 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I thought I saw a headline last night that the democrats in the house said they would vote to table any effort to remove Johnson.

[–] natural_motions@lemmynsfw.com 29 points 2 months ago (3 children)

They will because Johnson has enough of a "business as usual" facade to convince them that he isn't just as insane as the rest of the GOP.

Establishment corporate dems simply don't understand the situation the country is in, they still believe they can go back to one-hand-washes-the-other style corporate politics despite what they've seen since 2016.

They don't get that they're up against idealogues, not people simply looking to exploit the office for the lobbying paychecks and insider trading.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 16 points 2 months ago

Apparently Johnson has not yet broken a deal with the Dems like past speakers, so he is about a trustworthy as a GOP member can be.

Tabling a motion is keeping the status quo. If that somehow fails then there is zero chance the Dems will vote for Johnson to keep his spot as he can't keep a deal if he can't keep his position as speaker.

[–] Jaysyn@kbin.social 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Strictly because he's more honorable than Kevin McCarthy & hasn't lied to the Democrats yet.

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

McCarthy was even told that Dems would help him keep the Speaker role if he just asked for their help. He didn't want to, and didn't, and he got voted out. Pride comes before a fall.

[–] sirboozebum@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Or they could be propping him up to pass stuff and then dropping support just before the election.

[–] BraveSirZaphod@kbin.social 16 points 2 months ago

He is terrible, but he's better than any replacement, he's shown a willingness to work with Dems, and most importantly, if he ever breaks any promises, the Dems can sick him to the wolves.

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

They’d save him. He’s the least awful among a menagerie of traitors.

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Article I read a couple of days ago said they will. But who knows? There's no love lost between the parties.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 6 points 2 months ago

It is pragmatic to keep the House from being without a speaker, and he hasn't broken a deal yet. They are trying to keep the House functioning somewhat by tabling a vote, but if it came to a vote for a new speaker all the Dems will most likely vote Jeffries again.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Who could they possibly replace him with who wouldn’t also be a dumpster fire?

[–] ashok36@lemmy.world 55 points 2 months ago (5 children)

Apparently Anna Paulina Luna says if the motion to vacate hits the floor several Republicans will immediately resign, giving the house to the dems. Honestly, that's probably the best thing the Republicans could do. The dems would have to pass legislation immediately enshrining reproductive rights into law or they'd look like chumps. That would energize the conservative base and depress the liberal vote. The Republicans intend to institute one party rule if they win the presidency and rule by fiat. If they have to accept six months of abortion being legal in order to go full Handmaid's Tale, I think they would take that bargain.

[–] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's basically political fanfiction but imagine if what you say happens but the Democrats also expand the Supreme Court and pass new voting rights laws. They could guarantee Republicans lose and it wouldn't even be unfair.

[–] ashok36@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There's no way they'd expand the court. They don't have the votes in the senate. Voting rights laws maybe but I wouldn't count on it.

[–] LEDZeppelin@lemmy.world 25 points 2 months ago (2 children)

This.

As soon as Dems gain control of the house, Joe Manchin and “independent” Sinema will peak their head to block anything and everything in senate. Those two assholes single handedly squandered every opportunity during 2021-22 when Dems had the trifecta.

[–] ashok36@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Manchin is also retiring so you might be able to bribe him into voting for good stuff. Sinema will fuck us over just because though. It's her kink.

[–] CoggyMcFee@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Manchin has his post-Senate career ahead of him and he’s not going to throw that away just to help people.

They won't touch abortion. It is too useful for their elections at the moment. 😭

Works is a pretty loose term. She exists there and leaches off our tax dollars. I'm not sure I would call her constant stream of putrid speech "working."

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago

Are you kidding? She's one of Putin's top performers.

[–] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 19 points 2 months ago

She got re-elected in 2022. Her constituents see her antics and think it accurately represents them.

[–] Fapper_McFapper@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

If by work you mean stoking the culture wars. Yes.

[–] charonn0@startrek.website 3 points 2 months ago

Election in November.

[–] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 27 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Any allegations that Greene is transparently working as a Russian agent are entirely unsubstantiated.

You're right. She's been entirely opaque about it for quite some time.

[–] Nobody@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

She tried to introduce an amendment about Hungarians in Ukraine not being allowed to speak their native language.

It's an extremely obscure conspiracy theory that happens to be one of Putin's big talking points. He brought it up in the Tucker Carlson interview. How the fuck does MTG know anything about ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia and what language they speak? She can barely string a sentence together herself.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It’s an extremely obscure conspiracy theory

Conservatives love to elevate an obscure conspiracy theory to national policy. Check out the Tennessee state government's Chemtrails Bill, which

bans the "intentional injection, release, or dispersion" of chemicals within Tennessee "with the express purpose of affecting temperature, weather, or the intensity of the sunlight is prohibited."

I really fucking wish that people in the government would actually do things that positively impact the lives of their constituents. All these political pissing contests are tiring. What feels worse is that I, nor anyone not residing in the states of these nutbags, have the power to vote them out. We have to sit back and hope that people in other states come to their senses and stop their vitriol from spreading and infecting more and more sane people. It’s like the MAGA-ots are actually the Goa’uld from Stargate. Fucking parasites, the lot of them!
