Just a warning the Download and transfer via USB will no longer be an option from 26th of Feb according to Amazon UI.

Guess my aeroplane mode is never turning off now.

[–] AustralianSimon@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago

Download your the Amazon UI or use this tool while you can though.

Semi-related, but several years ago I had a good experience getting my audiobooks from audible with https://github.com/rmcrackan/Libation

[–] Coldmoon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 hours ago

Libation and OpenAudible are amazing.

[–] DaCrazyJamez@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Did this for my dad a year ago, got him a Boox and set up calibre. Between libraries and drm free sources Ive got him almost completely off of amazon.

[–] trolololol@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

Boox is the best, I've got to read using the app I want (moon reader), got to install whatever news apps I want

[–] Coldmoon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 hours ago

How is screen clarity? Which model did you get? Did you use a kindle prior for comparison?

[–] DaCrazyJamez@sh.itjust.works 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah...I did a lot a research before landing on Boox, and it 100% is the best. Pricey tho.

[–] Coldmoon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Can you tell me about screen quality vs kindle?

[–] DaCrazyJamez@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago

So, as I understand it, e-ink screens are all made by the same company and sold to the various ereader companies. As such, they are basically comparable. At least this was the case two years ago when I was looking into it.

Typical, I've just spent several hours over the last few days downloading everything manually 😫

[–] amphy@lemmy.ca 4 points 13 hours ago

Same here lol, glad to see it's easier for everyone else now though!

Well, it doesn't find my books. :(

Correction, got it to work.

Next step, unscrambling the books.

Edit: And, done. (there weren't that many books, 460 in total).

Just get a Kobo. Don't support Amazon surveillance

[–] Octorine@midwest.social 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Doesn't Kobo use Adobe DRM? I don't see how that's much better than Kindle.

I have a bunch of books from both stores, and Google too. The downloading and DRM removal process was about the same for all of them.

[–] Coldmoon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 hours ago

They’re allegedly working with bookshop.org so at least you’ll be able to support a local bookstore.

[–] helpImTrappedOnline@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

The point of this is to take what you already bought from Amazon with you when switching.

[–] B0rax@feddit.org 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I guess that tool helps with this transition

[–] makingStuffForFun@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Definitely. My response was probably a little glib.

Tools like this, that help people escape locked down systems are worth their weight in gold.

[–] trolololol@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Wait does that too remove drm or should I keep using calibre for that?

[–] Coldmoon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 hours ago

This is my question!

[–] B0rax@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago

I know what you mean. But saying a (weightless) software is worth their weight in gold made me chuckle.
