Cloudflare DDos protection isn't a silver bullet; the attacks are distributed and come from shifting source IPs, and are sophisticated in that they exploit resource intensive queries specifically designed to overload a Lemmy instance. If lemmy.world were to pivot to some other instance, who's to say the culprits wouldn't just resume their efforts pointed at the new location? There are theories these may be carried out by the recently-defederated fringe hate communities

Another piece to this is that smartphone innovations have slowed down significantly. I used my Samsung S8+ from launch 2017 until 2022 and couple kept it going longer but it wasn't getting security updates anymore and it's performance for Android Auto had intermittent issues, so I sold it to my friend (who's still using it) and upgraded. But as far as new features on new phones, by upgrading I got a faster display, faster SoC, and more RAM, which are nice to have but not game changers imo, and I lost a headphone jack, micro SD card expansion, and downgraded the resolution of my display (S21). I'm planning on holding onto this phone as long as possible and maybe I'll upgrade to a foldable if they iron out the kinks and come down in price.

People with iPhones use iMessage for texting which turns their bubbles blue (green for any other type of phone) and with iMessage there are a whole slew of features that people enjoy like chat bubbles to show active typing, read receipts, sending over Wi-Fi, etc. Often there's one member of a group chat with an Android who can't take advantage of those features and it limits the group chat features since they use SMS/MMS/RCS protocol instead.
