Man, we could have been at the XBOX 1800 by now.

Ironically that naming scheme would be slightly less terrible than what happened.

I've been an avid gamer my whole life, and I can't keep track of the order of their consoles. The most recent Xbox I own is a 360.

[–] vexikron@lemmy.zip 24 points 10 months ago (2 children)

What do you mean bro its Xbox then Xbox 360 then Xbox One which has the S variant and the ... not S variant... and... wait did I forget something? Xbox One X is in there somewhere?

Right yeah but you see the S variant is reasonably priced even though it can barely run any games from its generation but its backwards compatible but not really so you wanna get the X Box One X because even though its way above the promised price point it can play most games from its generation but you gotta watch out because even though its advertised as being able to do 4K in reality it has to lower graphics quality and frame rate when in 4K mode for most of the games where you would want to be able to do you know 4K60fps at high graphics and youre gonna need a 4K capable TV with all the right tech specs thats actually fairly big and thus expensive to notice a substantial difference at 4K that, as previously mentioned, will often times be negated by the game having to ironically lower graphics quality setting to display at 4K.

See, its simple!

I love how all of that could've been just made up. I stopped caring after the 360. I liked the 360, i think it was great. In 2020 or 21 i was in a electric store and thought why shouldn't i buy an xbox for my home cinema. I was in the xbox isle and i was honestly baffled. Why is this xbox so much cheaper than this xbox? What does the s mean? Is it small? Is x xtra small, or large? Which one is the new one? I assume there is a new one since there is a new playstation out, but not for sale.
I never felt so old in my life.

[–] vexikron@lemmy.zip 4 points 10 months ago

Wait, are you saying I actually got that all correct?

See, honest to God or Flying Spaghetti Monster or whatever, I did actually think that I missed something.

Like thats how fucking nonsense all of this is, I apparently was correct, from memory, but was also still so confused I thought I was wrong.

At least with fucking Sony the naming convention isnt totally insane, even if some of the same bullshit about 4K and variants of the later models is still confusing.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The new generation is much simpler, if you hate ownership then get the xbox series s, which is different from the Xbox one s and has no disk slot but also it runs at a lower framerate and can't do high resolution gaming. The Xbox series x, which is different from the Xbox one x, has a disk slot and is better in every way except it's a giant monolith that you need to figure out how to fit in your setup.

[–] vexikron@lemmy.zip 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

At this point I am actually laughing out loud as I legitimately have no idea if this is entirely correct, entirely false or a mix of both.

Very good naming schemes fucking incredible.

Yah, theyve tried so hard to avoid sequential numbering as they would appear to be lagging behind PlayStation making the laymen think the PlayStation equivalent is newer. If they followed numbers it would look something like:

  • Xbox
  • (360) Xbox 2
  • (Xb1) Xbox 3
  • (Xb1s) Xbox 3 S
  • (Xb1x) Xbox 3 pro
  • (Xbss) Xbox 4
  • (Xbsx) Xbox 4 pro
[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

You’re off by one. The 360 was the second Xbox.

[–] Good_morning@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 9 months ago

Just the formatting didn't do it any favors, I'll see if I can fix it.

[–] spicytuna62@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Atari had the 2600 and we all know that 2600 > 1800 > 720 > 360 > One. So suck it Microsoft.

[–] Bonehead@kbin.social 7 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Atari also had the 7800. At least they kept with their numbering scheme, even if it wasn't perfect.

[–] BruceTwarzen@kbin.social 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The playstation naming scheme is maybe boring, but at least it works.
Microsoft should just name their consoles like people name their files. Xbox_new, xbox_new_final, xbox_new_new_final.

[–] spicytuna62@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (2 children)

Don't forget Nintendo. Wii was great. Wii U made us all think it was the same console but beefier, not a whole new console. Wii 2 would have been better.

DS was A+. 3DS was a B+. I think there were plenty of people who didn't quite realize it was a separate console with backwards compatibility. At least it still made you aware of the gimmick. New Nintendo 3DS threw everyone for a loop because wtf actually is it? I've never seen a New 3DS in the wild. I don't think anyone really bought it.

Sony might really be onto something. I guess Occam's Razor applies to naming schemes. The simplest solution is often correct.

[–] TheIllustrativeMan@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

IIRC Microsoft purposely didn't do the numeric scheme because they would lave always been 1 behind Sony, and people are dumb.

Xbox 2 vs PS3 - > Xbox 4 vs PS5

People would have just assumed the Playstation was better based on name alone. Honestly they were probably right. They have to live with that decision though.

I have no idea what's going on with Nintendo. They have some absolute banger names but generally don't cash in with a follow up.

I’m still wondering what happened to Windows 9.

[–] entropicshart@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago

Windows 9 and iPhone 9 are out there in the void.

Microsoft would’ve been better off just biting the bullet and skipping a number and release an Xbox with the same number as PlayStation

Smash fans bought the New 3ds XL/LL (the LL is the Japanese variant of the same console) because of the additional joystick nub thing. There weren't many titles that required the New one and of those the Xenoblade game is the only one worth playing on original hardware. There was also some Nintendo bullshit about locking some of their retro virtual machine games to the New one even though the old 3ds was also completely capable of playing them too.

Of course, modders love the New 3ds, it's more powerful than the old 3ds and can kinda play some PS1 games badly, lol. I just bought a New 3ds LL a couple weeks ago and it's great. It's really easy to mod a 3ds, anybody can do it!

Edit: I really like the device, but the name of the New 3ds is absolutely awful. I still think the WiiU was worse because the name alone definitely hurt their sales.

Could be the 1080.

[–] MajorHavoc@programming.dev 4 points 10 months ago

Yeah, at least I would have some clue what the relationship between the 1800 and the 1980 was...

[–] BroBot9000@lemmy.world 25 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Still would have been a better name than the shit show they currently ended up with.

[–] PatFussy@lemm.ee 8 points 10 months ago

I mean now they have

X B(ox) O(ne) X

Makes sense that the next one is called

X B(ox) O(ne) X 360

That way it comes full circle

A stable diffusion horror from 2011? Maybe AI has already figured out time travel and it's using it to troll us.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 12 points 10 months ago (1 children)

This does look like something AI would come up with, now that you mention it.

[–] NickwithaC@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

The AI was trained on this.

They'll go around the world - twice - for their clients.

[–] wheeldawg@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

I get this reference.

[–] MeatsOfRage@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The least correct part of this prediction was the idea they'd be putting 4 controller ports on the Xbox after the 360

[–] wheeldawg@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

That's literally the first thing I thought about.

Oh I'm old enough to remember this masterpiece.

Believed it, too, when I was a kid.

Still waiting on that iPhone 2, Apple.
