I'm so glad we have "justice" and "democracy" instead of some capitalist kleptocratic feudalist dystopia.

Epstein didn't kill himself!

[–] BolexForSoup@kbin.social 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I understand this is not popular, but I really do think that he probably just killed himself. It was completely preventable and it’s wild that precautions weren’t taken, but ultimately, I think this was just incompetence and somebody who knew his life was over.

It's just that there's a limit to how much convenient fucking incompetence I'm willing to believe in, and this story is pushing that limit pretty fiercely.

It was one serious thing they failed to do, and that was that. You only start questioning something like that if it’s a series of events that conveniently lined up and/or it was highly improbable. And honestly? It wasn’t improbable/it wasn’t several convenient factors.

I think if there was a serious case to be made these charges wouldn’t have been dropped. Like you, I also leaned into the “I’m not so sure camp.“ But now I just can’t really stand by that feeling.

I can accept that the two officers in the suicide watch were just incompetent fools. And I completely believe Epstein killed himself - the failure is merely that he was allowed to do so.

But he had already attempted suicide. And the whole damn world was dying for his testimony. Tell any old idiot off the street to watch him to make sure he don't kill himself, and they'd drink whatever amount of coffee it would take to watch him for a week straight without blinking an eye. Still these idiots manage to hire two morons for the job that cannot be arsed to do the bare minimum.

If you took the job seriously, considering the information Epstein had and the fact that he had already attempted suicide, wouldn't you make sure to put officers you knew you could trust on the job? Rather than the two only idiots on this planet who apparently don't care enough about uncovering a network of child rapists to do even the bare minimum of their jobs?

Sure, it's probably just idiots all down the line, and just a funky accident that it ended up serving the interests of the rich, powerful, and morally corrupt. Even so, it just doesn't sit right with me, and I don't think it ever will.

[–] BolexForSoup@kbin.social 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It definitely won’t sit right with me that’s for sure

[–] Zorque@kbin.social -4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

That seems counter to your stance thus far.

[–] BolexForSoup@kbin.social 4 points 5 months ago

I am saying that the situation is horrifying. Surely you can allow me that?

both complied with the six-month deferred prosecution agreements they agreed to

Their deferred prosecution agreements required that they each perform 100 hours of community service and cooperate with a federal inquiry arising from Epstein’s death.

They did what the court required of them and kept their noses clean in the meantime. This is normal stuff. Been there done that. Judge says, "I'm deferring this case and you must do XYZ and you better not fuck up again." Do what you're told and walk.

BUT, I feel like prosecutors should have hit harder at the git go. < conspiracy talk goes here, and this talk is legit for once >

Yeah. What's up with these super old news popping up here more frequently recently?

This particular account hasn't posted a single comment. I'd believe they were some kind of news posting bot (which can be fine) that didn't do well here.

Guessing more just a human that didn't do well here, though.

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Why? They're accomplices in his murder.

[–] Jknaraa@lemmy.ml 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Are... you answering your own question, or?

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

To rephrase what I think he was asking: at best they failed to do their incredibly important job. At worst, they committed first degree murder as part of a criminal conspiracy. Unfortunately, due to their actions, we don't know what happened.

So, why is it that they are not sitting in jail for the minimum sentence on manslaughter, or at least sitting in jail til they cooperate enough to tell what actually happened.

If they don't know anything(somehow), they still fucked up an incredibly important job. Manslaughter sentence.

If they do know, make them a deal for cooperation or sentence them to first degree murder. Potential death penalty.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

I believe the person you're replying to was joking (or not joking) that this is clearly part of covering up the murder.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

U.S. prosecutors decided to end their criminal case against two Manhattan jail guards who admitted to falsifying records on the night Jeffrey Epstein killed himself on their watch.

In a Thursday filing in Manhattan federal court, prosecutors asked a judge to dismiss claims against Tova Noel and Michael Thomas, after both complied with the six-month deferred prosecution agreements they agreed to in May.

Epstein was found hanging in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center on Aug. 10, 2019, while awaiting trial for sex trafficking, in what New York City’s medical examiner called a suicide.

Noel and Thomas were accused of falling asleep and surfing the internet that night rather than checking on Epstein every 30 minutes.

Their deferred prosecution agreements required that they each perform 100 hours of community service and cooperate with a federal inquiry arising from Epstein’s death.

Thomas’ lawyer Montell Figgins said his client was happy with the dismissal and looked forward to putting the matter behind him.
