What's a cricut? Is it a brand of water bottle? Wait, do water bottles have brands now?

[–] straightjorkin@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Cricuts are a brand of paper cutting machine, it's used by crafters and artists to cut out things like stickers (that's what we see the water bottle for) and scrapbooking things. I'm assuming it's a gift for ops wife.

It can basically move a blade along an electronically controlled path, so it can cut intricate shapes.

It can also use a pen or marker attachment to draw on paper, so that you can have things that look like handwritten script. So for example, if you want to send out a bunch of wedding invitations and you want to make "hand written" addresses on the envelopes, you can use certain script fonts with your existing address book, or even try to design a custom font from your own writing, and use that as a mass produced "writing" tool. There are a bunch of ways to make drawings and things like that, too.

That's wicked sweet. I can only imagine the shenanigans I could get up to if I could make my own stickers

The engagement ring I bought lived on a shelf in the living room for a few months waiting for the trip I intended to propose during.

My wife had no idea. It was hilarious to show her pictures I took of her looking at things on the shelf and not noticing, like picking out a movie and just completely missing the big wooden ring box.

Which i guess is a long way of saying I love this game!

My wife nearly tripped over me when I got down on one knee, lol. It was the height of Pokemon Go, and it was a little too good of a distraction from me being suspicious in the park where we first met.

I love that. Were you expecting her to notice and had a plan in case she did notice, or were you just going with the flow?

[–] curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 1 day ago

Oh I knew she wouldn't notice it. And if she did, I would have just proposed then.

She's wonderfully oblivious to some things (and still is, which makes it still so much fun to do with birthday presents and such for her)

Somehow my brain translated "cricut" as "cactus" and I was having the darnedest time finding it...

Nice board games too; love Clank :)

[–] modus@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago

That's OK. I spent a few wasted seconds trying to find the "circuit."

[–] gilindoeslemmy@lemmy.world 51 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What is the purpose of this experiment?

[–] Nosavingthrow@lemmy.world 100 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Fun, mostly. She noticed basically right away, do, fun's all done for me.

Hope you like CUSTOM LABELS.

My wife has gone all in for the past month or two.

Note to self: it takes one day.

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

I assume it was a gift you left in plain sight.

[–] Marafon@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

To see if she notices.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I guess its a machine that cuts shapes or something? idk have fun ig

[–] FoxyFerengi@lemm.ee 31 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's good for custom vinyl stickers, or lettering on fabric. I've made star trek decals for my friends cars, made pop-up holiday cards, and custom designs for quilts among other things. It's a bit limited because the joy isn't as large as other cricut machines, and it isn't as good for engraving or embossing in my experience. But it's a great entry level machine

[–] grue@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I get the impression that Cricuts are super proprietary. Better to get some other brand of vinyl cutter machine, like Silhouette, Brother, Vevor, etc.

[–] Nosavingthrow@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm with you on that if it was for me. I have been looking at a getting a laser engraver, and I don't even consider proprietary software and materials.

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Just don't get a glowforge....

[–] Nosavingthrow@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I was looking at an ohmtech k40, but, haven't been able to justify the price for what will, essentially, be a toy

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago

I was in the business for a while and they can be more than toys but that's mostly up to you and what you want to do with it/need it for. Once I stopped working in the industry I kept mine for a while but eventually sold it since it didn't really solve any problems for me and took a lot of space just to make cool Christmas presents... I have a friend with 3D printers and other stuff that I go to when I need something for my business.

[–] FoxyFerengi@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I have often regretted buying it, but it was on deep sale. I also wasn't sure if I'd use it much so I didn't want to spend more for a silhouette. They locked a lot of features behind a pay wall a few years ago, but it's easy enough to bypass if you're good with gimp or a similar software

[–] adhocfungus@midwest.social 10 points 1 day ago

I see it as a CNC for paper and similar materials. I steal my spouse's at least once per year, often for making stencils for painting projects or for making layered lightboxes.

The only box I noticed was Tyrants of the Underdark. Someone is a board game aficionado! :o
