The "worce" part is pronounced like "worse", so worse-ter-shy'r.

[–] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Isn't it not more sha than shy'r?

Major Robert Thornbird: Our cameras saw some sort of weapon.

Jack O'Neill: Oh, well it's hard to say.

Major Robert Thornbird: Some sort of state secret?

Jack O'Neill: No. Just difficult to pronounce.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 month ago (8 children)

I genuinely don't understand why that's so hard for Americans so say.

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 26 points 1 month ago (2 children)

In revenge we invented Arkansas.

[–] odium@programming.dev 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

and Illinois.

I've heard illi noise so many times I've given up on correcting it.

It's not a common word for us and the phonetics don't match the pronunciation whatsoever.

[–] odium@programming.dev 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

if it's spelled worchestershire, I'm gonna pronounce it worchestershire.

Something like Woostuhshuh, apparently, for some reason. 🤨

[–] SnowmenMelt@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Americans like over pronouncing shire for all English counties until they remember New Hampshire exists.

[–] leftzero@lemmynsfw.com 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's not the shire that worries me, it's where the fuck the rces in Worcester is going...

[–] sik0fewl@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's worce-ster-shire. And the "worce" is pronounced "worse".

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

OK, but what if I pronounce it better?

[–] bulwark@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Ragdoll_X@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

Don't forget the shire.

[–] MY_ANUS_IS_BLEEDING@lemm.ee 11 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Depends on how you pronounce shire. Americans tend to pronounce it like the hobbit place when it's more like "shuh".

[–] klemptor@startrek.website 6 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I'm from New Jersey and I pronounce it Wuh-stah-shur. I think that's reasonably correct?

I hear "Were-Chest-Sure" around here.

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

My buddy has been watching too many redneck cooking videos and calls it "warsh-yer-sister" sauce.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

I just saw a sign this morning that said "Irish Wristwatch - now you know you can't pronounce it". The sign was right.

[–] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 month ago

Does webtoon pay comic artists now? Or is that watermark there for no reason

[–] Martineski@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

There's little visible name of the comic near it.

There's a British surname, Featherstonhaugh. Many of the people with it pronounce it "Fanshaw."

[–] codapine@lemm.ee 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's pronounced "Worcestershire".
