β€œDon’t overthink it” & β€œworrying won’t solve the problem when you have to wait anyway”.

I always give that advice. However, I, personally, always overthink and keep worrying.

[–] Carighan@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

I would agree, but I'm still frantically thinking whether I actually agree and whether I should be expressing that publicly!

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 47 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Always add tests to your code!

[–] python@programming.dev 17 points 2 months ago

True that haha

In practice, I live by "never write any code that's important enough for anyone to insist on testing it" 😎

β€œDone is better than perfect.”

[–] Today@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

I'm working on this, though i usually say - I'd rather get bitched at for doing it wrong than for not doing it. At my job it's to emphasize the stupidity of the task and the lack of training on a shitty system.

Be kind to yourself

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 29 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Don't eat a entire box of thin mints.

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That's easy to obey... but samaos seem to spontaneously evaporate near me.

[–] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

I had a customer that mentioned something about her daughter and the cookies, I interrupted her to ask for 10 boxes of Samoas.

They did not last as long as one would hope.

Do not eat that entire 3KG bag of wine gums to yourself

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

No issues for me

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I'm sorry, what? Elaborate for curiosity!

[–] bassad@jlai.lu 27 points 2 months ago

Stop checking the news.

Grab a book before sleeping rather than your phone.

"Your life is worth it, don't give up!"

Right as I think about my own suicide plans.

I feel like a hypocrite.

[–] shapesandstuff@feddit.org 14 points 2 months ago

Asking for help us a sign if strength, not weakness.

I know that because i find it extremely hard to ask for help.

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 7 points 2 months ago

Oof that his home.

All I can say is that things can turn it better, it has for me personally.

It's great of you that you inspire others, though, not hypocritical, it's what we all need sometimes. Doesn't matter if you don't see it personally, you are helping another human being get along.

[–] felykiosa@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

I feel you so fucking much.

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

Sometimes it helps to take your own advice, like having a conversation with yourself as if you were another person.

Other times, there's a cloud around our heads that stops that from working.

I hope you find someone to talk to who treats you with the same compassion that you treat others.

Depending on where you live, someone to talk to is probably a phone call away. Give it a try if that's an option.

[–] ChihuahuaOfDoom@lemmy.world 22 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's not a problem if it takes you 12 tries and you still haven't gotten it, do it a 13th. If I don't do something perfect on the 1st or 2nd try I'll most likely never do it again.

[–] howrar@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago

I get the opposite problem. If I get things nearly perfect on the first try, I'll just think to myself that I'll never top that and give up. There's something satisfying about seeing improvement. In the same vein, seeing results get worse is highly discouraging.

[–] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 21 points 2 months ago

"don't worry about it being perfect" and "stop being so self critical"

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If you just do the thing, people will stop asking you when are you going to do the thing.

[–] howrar@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Mom called. She wants to know when to expect grandkids.

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

She already has 5 leave me be.

[–] Meltrax@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

Sleep more.

You really need to get your backups in order.

[–] chraebsli@programming.dev 2 points 1 month ago

Ohh that was a good one. best one I think.

Same as having a good backup strategy but didn't try to restore once.

Try to hit the gym at least 3 times a ~~day~~ week. Daily if you can, even if it just means a light "spa" day.

[–] 5wim@slrpnk.net 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Three times a day, or, if you can muster it, once a day!

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Lol, oops. 3 times a week

[–] shapesandstuff@feddit.org 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Rest days are important! Depending on what you're doing of course but ya need to rest

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I overheard someone saying that rest days can be even more important than gym days because that's when the body recovers.

My body does a lot of recovering!

[–] shapesandstuff@feddit.org 2 points 2 months ago

Thats when the gains are growing! :'D

[–] dingus@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Rest days have really helped a ton mentally actually. I used to never be consistent with any sort of workouts I tried. Because I tried to do them daily and then would just soon get tired of doing it and stop altogether. But now my goal is 1-2 days between workouts. I've been able to be fairly consistent since March of this year...excluding unusual things like holidays and illness. I've never been this consistent for this long and I think the rest days are really what helped make the distance. Instead of dreading it every single day, I can mentally prepare in advance for when I have to go versus when I can just chillax and veg on the couch.

[–] shapesandstuff@feddit.org 2 points 2 months ago

Pretty much the classic way of things:

"i gotta work out -> I'll do it daily! -> oh no i missed one day -> might as well give up"

When in reality going once a week is better than not going at all. Going three times a week is difficult enough, especially when you have other responsibilities or hobbies.

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

That's really awesome, and I know that rest days are very important.

But uh...I was just making a joke about not going to the gym! Ahaha

Don't Write Lemmy Posts In Title Case

Actually, I like capitalizing random nouns, so sometimes I might do that accidentally.

[–] chraebsli@programming.dev 2 points 1 month ago

as a swiss german (we capitalize nouns for those who don't know), I sometimes automatically capitalize nouns when writing in english, especially when I just wrote something in german. Its a habit and at least for me, its really hard to prevent me doing it.

Same is for when I wrote mucn in english before, then writing something in german. Then everything is in lowercase.

All advice I give is advice I should take, but don't
