It’s unclear what Liddell did with $1.5 million worth of wings.

Come On journalists, we are dying over here

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 14 points 4 weeks ago

Yeah, I was hoping the story would explain that she was supplying a friend’s restaurant or something.

[–] charade_you_are@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

I'm pretty sure I could eat them before they spoil

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 18 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

That is a FUCK TON of chicken wings.

Alexa tells me the wholesale price of chicken wings is $3.22 a pound and each pound is around 5 wings.

So $1.5m / $3.22 = 465,838.5 pounds of wings.
2,329,193 wings.

What did they charge her with? "Possession with intent to distribute"? LOL.

[–] charade_you_are@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 weeks ago

Well you know cops, they're always overestimating the value of chicken wings to make themselves look good.

[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

If you ate that much I think it just might kill you.

Why is a news station in Texas concerned with an Illinois school district?

[–] HonkTonkWoman@lemm.ee 9 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

The news networks might have the same ownership & are sharing content to keep readers/viewers happy, without having to pay for local reporting.

One of our local news outlets does this because new ownership cut their budget. They use nationwide stories from other partner networks to cover the broadcast time or publication quota.

It kinda sucks living in an area where you can’t get local news.

[–] bamboo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

In this case, WGN-TV is owned by Nexstar and KCBD is owned by Gray. Probably the case that KCBD has little budget for reporters, so they repackage other stations news (and add their copyright at the bottom) to drive traffic to their site.

Thanks for this. Am I correct in assuming that the deal would likely be made between Gray & Nexstar, rather than directly between WGB & KCBD?

I know when Sinclair wound up owning a second affiliate in my area, the non local stories were the same between the two affiliates. They each had their own staff & local coverage, but the filler was largely the same across both stations.

[–] bamboo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

It seems like the same author has the same story posted on other Gray stations as well. This is just my assumption but considering the KCBD article says "Copyright 2024 Gray Local Media, Inc. All rights reserved." it looks like they are just regurgitating other news stories and presenting it as their own on all the Gray affiliates.

[–] HonkTonkWoman@lemm.ee 2 points 4 weeks ago

Ah, that’s a great catch.

It's content syndication. You can see right at the start of the article that it's attributed to Gray News.

Readers in Texas might be interested in the story just like we are here...

Your comment is too far down this list

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 15 points 4 weeks ago

"Hey... psst... c'mere... you wanna buy some wings?"

[–] RandomStickman@fedia.io 11 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

How do you even move that much wings lmao. Is there some wing mafia?

[–] SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.world 8 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Spread over a decade it's not a crazy amount for a local franchise to take.

[–] RandomStickman@fedia.io 8 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

She did it over 19 months though

[–] teft@lemmy.world 10 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

If she did it over 19 months and we use @jordanlund's figures from another comment in the post of her stealing 465,838lbs of wings it would mean that she was stealing 800lbs of chicken a day. That's an insane amount of chicken.

[–] artichokecustard@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

this lady is definitely the fall guy for some chicken mafia related activities, people were profiting from this, it's bigger than just one lady and some friends, how can you move that much chicken in a day, everyday? someone find the closest wing place and tell me that their prices are incredibly reasonable at least

[–] parrhesia@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 weeks ago

Or she is making really good chicken and selling out a lot

[–] Subnet64@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago

With prices today, like 6 dozen?

[–] TheFin@leminal.space 1 points 4 weeks ago
