MODERATORS

As part of DeSantis’ “Freedom Summer” initiative, the state’s transportation secretary, Jared W. Perdue, announced earlier this month that bridges in the state will have no choice but to be illuminated in red, white and blue from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

“Thanks to the leadership of @GovRonDeSantis, Florida continues to be the freest state in the nation,” Perdue wrote on X.

Give my regards to the Ministry of Truth.

This feels like it’s just a way to get around Pride in June.

Didn’t read the article before I said this. Why are my shittiest suspicions about Desantis always right.

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemm.ee 36 points 5 months ago

And Juneteenth, and a day of remembrance for victims of gun violence

[–] buttPickle@lemmy.world 73 points 5 months ago (2 children)

The rain is starting to end. The sun begins to peek from the clouds. DeSantis looks upward in dread.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 44 points 5 months ago (3 children)

I do like that the rainbow has been ruined for them despite their holy book talking about how god made it to show Noah and his descendants that he wouldn't kill them all off like he did everyone who came before them.

"The human population has become too genetically diverse since the Garden of Eden, I need to fix that" -God

[–] constantokra@lemmy.one 3 points 5 months ago

Talk about ruining the rainbow right? Not going to kill everybody... Again

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

I remember the olds whining and whining about how the homosexuals ruined the word "gay" for them.

Anyone: "Take a look, it's in a book, the reading rainbow!"

Florida: "Put your hands behind your back."

Florida

freest state in the nation

Florida

The irony is indescribable

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 27 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Gosh, it would be a shame if some of those lights were to be combined or refracted into other colors...

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 32 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Prisms are a liberal plot to destroy America!

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The prisms are turning kids autistic

[–] constantokra@lemmy.one 1 points 5 months ago

Nah, it's the puzzles.

[–] whygohomie@lemmy.world 26 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It's like Pleasantville, but in reverse and it's a horror film.

In many ways, it's exactly like Pleasantville. The world is changing and the reactionaries don't like it, so they try to use the force of law to make things back the way they perceived them to be, including by restricting the use of color.

[–] ImADifferentBird@lemmy.blahaj.zone 26 points 5 months ago

As part of DeSantis’ “Freedom Summer” initiative, the state’s transportation secretary announced that bridges can only be illuminated in red, white and blue this summer.

Because nothing says freedom like restricting the colors people can use.

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 22 points 5 months ago

What a fucking idiot.

[–] maculata@aussie.zone 18 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Yup…

What a bunch of glue eaters.

[–] remotelove@lemmy.ca 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You should try glue on pizza though.

[–] maculata@aussie.zone 2 points 5 months ago

Mmmmm. Keeps the cheese from sliding off!

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 16 points 5 months ago

Go out and swap some of the bulbs on their red, white, and blue stings to various other colors to make it a rainbow.

[–] BigMacHole@lemm.ee 14 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Republicans are NOT Snowflakes!

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

I'm not going to let you groom my children with your visible light spectrum!

[–] maynarkh@feddit.nl 13 points 5 months ago

As The Washington Post reported:

The Ringling Causeway Bridge over Sarasota Bay usually lights up in rainbow colors for a week in June, and also marks other causes during the summer, such as orange for National Gun Awareness Month and yellow for Women’s Equality Day.

So I went WTF is "National Gun Awareness Month", I mean who actually needs a month long reminder that the US is full of guns? So I went and apparently it's National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Accurate reporting from the Washington Post, as always.

[–] die444die@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The same confirmed child molester, Ron Desantis, governor of Florida?! Who would have thought?

[–] shasta@lemm.ee 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)
[–] todd_bonzalez@lemm.ee 2 points 5 months ago

Probably, but your insult for him isn't very great.

  1. He's clearly not gay, he is known for is inappropriate relationships with teenage girls.
  2. Republicans won't hear you use "gay" to insult them, but all the queer people on Lemmy will.

That aside, DeSantis absolutely looks like a face that belongs on a mugshot on the sex offender registry.

[–] todd_bonzalez@lemm.ee 7 points 5 months ago

Florida banning the visible spectrum because it's too gay. Are we sure this isn't some sort of simulation to see how much we can take before we figure out we're in a social experiment.

I'll be in Florida soon. I kinda wanna head over after work one night so I can see how awful it looks.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

This is the guy that yelled at kids for wearing masks. During a pandemic.

[–] maynarkh@feddit.nl 7 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I wonder if they could get away with illuminating the whole bridge in red, since the normal street lights are white and the sky is blue. You know, for Labor Day.

[–] constantokra@lemmy.one 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

In Florida most of our street lights are purple because they bought a cheap batch of LEDs

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Not just purple, gorgeous Lavender Menace!

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

May Day is before Memorial Day and they could definitely go red for that. You know because reasons unrelated to communism that surely exist.

[–] InternetUser2012@midwest.social 6 points 5 months ago

I don't think they understand what free means. Snowflakes.

[–] JimmyBigSausage@lemm.ee 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Man karma gonna be a bee-otch on this guy.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 5 points 5 months ago

One can hope.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

So much "freedom" down there in Gilead. Policing colors and not letting people choose to eat lab-grown meat. Wouldn't want anyone getting any ideas about any notions of ACTUAL freedom.

[–] AFC1886VCC@reddthat.com 5 points 5 months ago

Going to launch rockets at rainbows next for being too gay?

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee 4 points 5 months ago

Calling Florida the freest state in the country is like saying it's safe to eat enriched uranium rods.
