This was the last version without blinking Ewoks, or Greedo firing his blaster, if I recall correctly.

[–] teft@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago (2 children)

There were no other versions after this. There especially weren’t versions with a computer generated Jabba.

[–] MajorHavoc@programming.dev 5 points 2 months ago

Yeah. Especially not that version.

I can't believe Star Wars ended after Return of the Jedi. George Lucas could have made a fortune if he'd produced a prequel trilogy, or a sequel trilogy, or made a lot of TV spinoffs.

[–] DuffmanOfTheCosmos@beehaw.org 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Actually, the laser disc releases are the original cuts, and AFAIK are the highest definition versions available of the original trilogy that aren't altered.

[–] MajorHavoc@programming.dev 4 points 2 months ago

True. But those can't make a satisfying ka-thunk sound when rewound. So there's a tradeoff to consider.

Before the dark times. Before the remaster.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

Really? Damn, I saw these for sale recently. Might be worth picking up just for that novelty. Not that I have a VCR anymore.

[–] DaveX64@lemmy.ca 19 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I had this set. They kept saying that that was the last release ever so you better get them.

"One last time" Fuck thats an ancient memory right there.

Last release before they added all the ~~children~~ CGI stuff.

[–] Entropywins@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Hey, I was a child when they released the special edition box set and I fucking loved em!!!

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 2 months ago

that was supposed to say cgi... stupid auto correct.

[–] RonnyZittledong@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

Still have these in a box somewhere in my garage. I do not however have a VCR. I would be tempted to bust them out if it were not for the great fan made 4k original restorations out there.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 2 months ago

I received this for Xmas that year.

Separately, it should have been Vader, Yoda, Emperor.

[–] Bartsbigbugbag@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 months ago

These are the ones I grew up on. Had them until my garage burned down with all of our VHS inside of it sometime during the 00s.

[–] Assman@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

Had it! Found it at a yard sale in the late 90s. Some poor bastard's mom sold em when he left for college. We wore the tapes out and then buried them in the back yard.

I remember seeing these at my grandparents’ house before I ever saw any of the movies as a young kid. My uncle was a sci-fi nerd and I guess may still be to some extent.

I never got to watch these, though. No idea where they are now.

When slave Leia falls down the pit, her bewb pops out! You can see it if you frame-by-frame.

[–] Lorindol@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Not Leia, it's the slave dance girl with the tentacles on her head.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

Was it? It’s been so long since I’ve seen it hahaha

Me too. Along with all my Godzilla tapes. I have digital copies of all of them now but looking at them makes me happy.

[–] BolexForSoup@kbin.social 2 points 2 months ago

Nothing wrong with a little nostalgia
