I support Iran’s defensive actions against Israeli aggression. I hope Iran chooses military and intelligence targets instead of civilian ones, in compliance with international law, despite Israel targeting primarily civilians in their war of conquest.

Well said. Lawful engagement is the only way if anyone is going to hold that kind of power. American hegemony has proven itself thoroughly hypocritical, time and time again. It's attack dog in the middle east is holding the leash. Rule of law must reign - but never forget its our collective responsibility to write and uphold just laws for the collective.

Hopefully this retaliation will be enough to scare Israel straight. However, I am concerned that it will lead further escalation and greater US involvement..

[–] matcha_addict@lemy.lol 13 points 5 months ago

It won't. Unfortunately this is not even a propportional response. I highly doubt attack on Gaza will be reduced, and I only hope Israel won't use this as pretext to attack Iran even more.

USA should keep there feets and hands down on this one. This isn't an affair that need their involvement.

[–] livus@kbin.social 18 points 5 months ago

They are already shooting down drones so no chance of that.

We could easily have spent enough to pay tuition for every engineering student in the US for the year this evening.

[–] matcha_addict@lemy.lol 25 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I hope Israel does not use this as pretext for escalation. Wouldn't be surprising if the genocidal state pursues this.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 months ago

let's be real, the genocide would have continued regardless of the attack, this fued has been going for years this attack is a drop in the bucket really. It's only going to be used an an excuse for international support at this point but, eventually I expect international support will waiver

Some cool footage of the attack.

Looks like they couldn't intercept all of them.

[–] Arcturus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 5 months ago

Looks both terrifying and beautiful

Cool video thanks for linking it.

Looks like taxpayers are footing a nice bill again

They sent drones? From Iran?

[–] taanegl@lemmy.world 13 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Si. We're about to see how the iron dome stands against it. Maybe Iran has figured out a way to bypass Israeli defences...

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Unlikely, we’ve seen Iranian drones in action in Ukraine and they’re not particularly special. I bet Israel shoots them all down.

[–] seathru@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 5 months ago

I see someone's never played StarCraft. Zerg rush is absolutely a viable strategy. How many rockets are loaded and ready to go in one area at any given time?

[–] UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world -2 points 5 months ago

Probably not. It's one of if not the most sophisticated air-defense on the planet. Without overwhelming it, attacks have little chance of any significant successes.

Just look at Ukraine, most attacks never reach their target and they are probably not equipped as well as Israel is (and also spread out much further). Even Russia's "hypersonic" missiles are shot down by plain ol' patriot systems on the regular.

So unless Iran pulls out some really fancy tricks, they will probably just hit low-value targets or maybe manage to overwhelm the defense in some limited areas (at the cost of a lot of drones). If this was to drag on however, it'll start to hurt eventually...

[–] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 3 points 5 months ago

Would explain it taking hours

[–] gibmiser@lemmy.world 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)
[–] casmael@lemm.ee 2 points 5 months ago

Yeah not great

[–] Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Hours away? Interesting measurement.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.de 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

That measure was probably used to show the reader how much time Israel has to respond and or retaliate.

[–] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 3 points 5 months ago

Or until they'll have an update on what happened/happens.

[–] Nachorella@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I know not much about global politics. Could this be cheeky ww3? Or is this sort of thing pretty common?

[–] FreudianCafe@lemmy.ml 23 points 5 months ago

What israel did, attacking the consulate of iran inside Síria is really really fucked up. Iran played it cool and did this attack today, wich you could consider a very light response because attacking an embassy is casus belli (reason for war). But the usa will turn this into ww3 sooner or later, theres no doubt about it

[–] Bernie_Sandals@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

Likely just a common tit for tat attack in retaliation for the Israelis bombing the Iranian embassy in Syria

Here's a past example

[–] Darkscryber@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

*Iran have joined the game
