Your science teacher was wrong, unfortunately. In Classical Latin, datum is pronounced as [ˈd̪ät̪ʊ̃ˑ] "dah-too(m)" and likewise data as ~~[ˈd̪äːt̪ä]~~ [ˈd̪ät̪ä] "dah-tah."
