don't recognise the walled garden problem, because I'm on macOS, where software walled gardens do not exist

Really, so you haven't noticed that root hasn't really been root lately? Or that it's been getting harder to install software from outside the MacOS app store with each update? They're not stupid, they're not going to do it all at once, they're doing it bit by bit.

Mark my words, there will be a day in the short term when you go to install something outside the MacOS app store and you'll get a "Can't do that without a paid Apple dev account" error, at best

It's also confusing to single out macOS (which has better third-party repos than Windows by absolute leagues), when iOS is right there.

Once again, iOS being a walled garden is an improvement to what was before and I'm not advocating for Windows in any sense of the word

negates the sheer cost of being in a app walled garden on a PC

You don't seem to want to address the walled garden problem, which flies directly in the face of user choice and freedom as much as the problems with the hardware does.

Swap in "iPhone", and nothing changes.

The iPhone was an improvement to what was before, trying to make MacOS into a walled garden is going backwards

Nobody is calling support for Windows, fuck windows to, but nothing you said negates the sheer cost of being in a app walled garden on a PC, the obliteration of upgradeability and near 0 repairability

If your SSD dies or you start needing more RAM for your workflow Apples position is, essentially, "Get a new laptop, fuck the environment!"

There's that one weirdo, the mod of linuxsucks lmao

Actively turning the PC into a walled garden

First point, could have worded it better, but that's definitely all software

Plus, Apple controls the entire stack so criticism of MacOS is criticism of their hardware and vice versa

Rolling out where? As far as I know it's only ever been installed and sold in a single device. Can't tell ya why but it is.

We're only about 4 months in ATM, it's quite early

Nonetheless, it's technically sound so even if it does flop, it will have been for primarily greed reasons rather than because soldering was superior

Fuck Windows AND MacOS honestly

There's already plenty of fuck Windows memes and posts

Integrating CPU/GPU/RAM on the same chip just leads to crazy increases in performance and efficiency. As usual Apple paves the path to erosion of consumer choice.

CUDIMM is the socket-able answer to this and it's rolling out. What's the excuse for soldering SSDs?

but it can also be disabled with some simple terminal commands.

For now, Apple's not stupid, they know if they move too fast they'll piss off too many people so they're doing it slowly step by step.

Linux is awesome, it’s neat watching its developer friendliness result in snowballing market share.

Why not ditch MacOS? Mac's are just as bad as Windows, just in different ways.

Apple has been progressively neutering root on a path to make a laptop as much of a walled garden as iOS. Not to mention the entirely soldered RAM and SSD and then charges ridiculous premiums to get more

LMAO, The company that makes the algorithm has control over what that algorithm "weighs" it's not that hard for them to tweak the values so it "weighs" whatever propaganda or content they want to push more of much higher than other content.

It's true, the end user does have some influence on the algorithm, but when they have it tweaked to "weigh" pro-CCP or pro-Right-wing trash much higher than other content it doesn't take much to end up falling back. For example, watching part of single pro-Trump video would make the algorithm push much more Trump trash where it would take 5 "normal" fully watched videos to continue showing "normal" videos.

And that's assuming the average user is even aware enough to influence it to that degree, which they don't.

Plus, US based users have their data stored on US servers hosted by Oracle, China has no access to it.

Yea, the data is stored in the US, but it still influences the TikTok US algorithm (because they have a separate algorithm for China ofc) which is still wholly controlled outside of the US

Is there any future for Microsoft gaming?

Yes, in the "Netflix of Gaming" Game Pass, they've already been pivoting on it more and more. They know they're losing their hardware dominance

Only a matter of time IMO before they work on getting Game Pass games on Linux. Which would be great because I got the bulk of my games from Game Pass these days lol
