Life is just a bleak pile of shit sometimes. But there are wonderful parts too. Reach out to one person you know and talk to them. The rules of statistics say that way more people appreciate you than you think. If you dont immediately know who to call, check https://findahelpline.com

I hope you get better soon.

I‘m way ahead of you. Using three forgejo instances and patiently waiting for federation. I love forgejo.

I use ionos since 10 years and I‘m very happy, but only for webhosting stuff. The VPS Services I get from Hetzner and I havent really tested them.

I did have a meeting with IONOS this week though about it and I‘m positive about the UI for new vps owners since its quite easy to grasp but I dont think they’re a better option than hetzner.

I agree. But I would go further and say if other industries didnt have more complex schemes and locked down IP (eg car manufacturing), people would def build their own shit with current tools. Its always the greed of those not willing to invest in innovation that keeps progress away. Media piracy and FOSS culture are the only real challengers to greed imo.

I‘m currently trying to bring up a rather complicated setup using garage. Garage on Homeserver behind firewall, vpn relay, peertube and other s3 compatible services on a vps. Garage works rather weill, the vpn is giving me a hard time though. Can recommend.

[–] Haui@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Peertube is essentially mastodon or lemmy with videos. Its trivial to set up compared to the other two. I run a private instance so I cant talk about the rate of issues but from an experienced admin perspective, its no more of a problem to set up and run than the others.

But I too think that long term it would be great to have more user friendly setups as to enable less experienced folks to host it.

Having as much on one machine as possible has efficiency and maintenance benefits since you have less machines to configure. The drawback is that multiple services can add up peak demands and run the machine oom which you can either solve by leaving extra headroom or make them redundant imo.

Someone with more experience than me might have other ideas to add.

As someone with diagnosed mental health issues, I can tell you that I mean no harm. But sadly, the pure difference in perception paired with unfamiliarity of the two parties makes the situation insanely dangerous, not the person.

You never know why the person is in this predicament and if they have a tendency towards violence, robbery or other things. I‘m not saying they are. I‘m saying you have to assume they are before making that decision. Can you defend yourself against a pulled knife or even gun, do you have enough mental capacity to observe them at all times. Those odds do not look good.

So, although I would never willingly look down on folks less fortunate than myself. I too will never ever let a stranger into my house if they raise any concerns.

Dont buy stuff from amazon. Its like „have you seen that guy lucifer? He sells the greatest stuff for cheap!“ what could go wrong…

[–] Haui@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 months ago

It makes no sense to switch from either to the other imo. It would make sense to switch to mobile linux for those who are tech savvy and once it is more polished, the others.

Also brainwashing. People get their ideas from other people. Some through books, some through those they call experts but we‘re very easily influenced. Getting blasted with biased shows and commercials that show us how „fair“ law enforcement is makes people easy targets for pushing dangerous laws.

Hi folks!

I‘m currently setting up a „fediverse vps“ so to speak but federation is no joke so far.

I got lemmy, mastodon and matrix running pretty stable now (in docker and behind nginx proxy manager which seems to be very rare).

The next step is enabling federation and so far it’s brutal. I broke matrix by changing up the .well-known stuff and now nothing works.

I think my knowledge is just lacking at this point. Does anyone have experience with a setup like this and wants to help? I basically need the npm config and/or other changed configs for federation.

Thanks for reading. Have a good one.

Edit: Since some kind souls wanted to help and need to see configs, here they are.

Let me know if you need anything else! :)

Edit2: Here is the synapse config

Hi folks! I just came up with something, no idea if its good but you judge that:

TL;DR: Can we make a browser extention or something that gives us a button to copy an entire comment chain with crucial, niche advice to a lemmy post or is that gone since the API went down?

I often google things for work and hobbies, code snippets, log entries, ways to make my insane docker setups work. For example, I got a lemmy instance working in docker with this.

Very often, I end up on reddit. If the post or comment in question is helpful, I'd like to upvote or ask a follow up question. For that I still need my reddit account.

But for the "praise helpful comment" I could also do that here. Some people link to the comment/post which also brings back traffic to reddit (which I dont like).

So I'd probably just copy the post (and/or comment chain in question) to a new post on lemmy.

It would go a little like this:

  • User1: "Post describing a topic"
  • User2: Helpful comment nr 1
  • User1: Follow up question
  • User2: Helpful comment nr 2

For that, I'd need some kind of automation. Since the API is gone, I don't know if that is possible but the option to "copy entire comment chain up to this comment" would definitely be awesome.

Feel free to tell me otherwise.

Edit: If this isn't obvious: It would accumulate the most helpful stuff from reddit on here without it being blindly crossposted by bots and would push google results (because its niche!) and most likely not a copyright issue because it is so few things that it should fly under the radar.

Edit: I solved this using the command gsettings reset org.gnome.Settings last-panel

And it turns out I have the exact problem of this user: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/2017498 I just didnt know because everything in gnome control center didnt work. After resetting, I deliberately clicked on the mouse settings and it went bad again. Reset again and it works again.

Old Description (out of date, just for reference):

Hi! I'm trying to find out why my display settings are not showing when rightclicking or using gnome-control-center display.

I have recently disabled a mod I had done to disable pipewire since I couldn't hear anything when using rdp. But probably some of the changed configuration is now breaking parts of my system.

Here's the error message when using the above command:

GStreamer-Play[16682]: ERROR: GtkGstPlay: 'playbin' element not found, please check your setup
^CTrace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)

I tried the following:

  • uninstalling gstreamer (bad idea)
  • reinstalling gstreamer using apt-get install libgstreamer1.0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-bad1.0-dev gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly gstreamer1.0-libav gstreamer1.0-tools gstreamer1.0-x gstreamer1.0-alsa gstreamer1.0-gl gstreamer1.0-gtk3 gstreamer1.0-qt5 gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio
  • reinstalling ubuntu desktop

I'm pretty much out of ideas as when I google the problem I only get obscure problems on github which don't seem to resemble the problem I have.

Can anyone tell me what may be wrong? I will gladly provide logs if you need them.

Thank you very much for reading. Have a good one.

Hi folks!

I have a sonos system from my pre self hosting days and it’s much too expensive to exchange for something else atm.

Since today, I can’t use my music subscriptions anymore and I don’t have any music stored locally. Reason is a giant service outage at sonos.

I know, it’s the classic argument for cutting the cord. My question now is, how would you do it? Just pirate music since I have a subscription and am entitled to listen to music?

Btw. the issue is with sonos cloud services so the music services are available everywhere but in sonos. If I had a way to stream music from apple or amazon in my homenetwork, sonos should be able to pick it up.

Also, what do people do with sonos products? Do they get jailbroken/rooted or is that not a thing?

Thanks for reading. Have a good one.

Hello everyone! I'm using a TIG stack (Telegraf, InfluxDB, Grafana) in Docker to monitor my server and I keep running into the same issues.

When the Telegraf container gets updated (removed and recreated), the Hostname changes. This leads to Grafana to split the data (best case) or show no data at all (worst case) since it was told to show a specific field which is named after the host.

Now, I have tried regexing the column (example: /uptime_format/ in flux) but I'm a noob at both regex and flux so that doesn't work either.

I think I might need to set the hostname in the telegraf container but I thought I'd ask if anyone else solved this problem before. :)

Thank you for reading.

I recently had a discussion about ACs and how they heat up cities.

Then I found an article about theoretical increase of efficiency of acs by using the heat pulled from a room to run a thermoelectric device and getting some of the energy back that was used in the ac.

I‘ve had this downstream thought many times already: since hot air is basically just energy stored. Could we theoretically pull (all?) the energy from the air (depending on desired temp) to cool it and casually fuel our society’s energy needs?

Maybe I‘ll mod my ps3 to make it emulate games. I heard that works pretty good.

I obviously would like to get tons of old games and since they’re not sold anywhere for a fair price, I deem it morally sound to find them.

I heard of „handheld retro gaming consoles“ which also have found games on them. Does anyone have experience with those?

Btw: Since the graphics are pretty low res, that could be a better alternative than the ps3 since the 55“ tv its hooked up to might make it look worse.

It’s just an idea at this point so I‘m happy for any direction. I figured c/retrogaming might be wrong since talking about finding unlicensed games might be against their rules. Feel free to advise me otherwise.

P.S.: Forgive the ignorance. I know my way around commandline and some medium advanced programming but I‘m not pro at sailing the high seas at all.

TL;DR: I want to pull emails from 5 accounts on to my homeserver to anti spam them and have my clients pull from there

I currently have like 5 major email accounts on different providers which I use for 100s of accounts on many platforms.

Some of these accounts are very old and come with the added bonus of no spam filter on the free tier.

Now, if you use outlook, you can define anti spam rules there, I know. But since I‘m using many different devices and different mail clients, I can’t be bothered to make anti spam rules for all of them.

So I thought it should be doable to pull all the emails from all my accounts and have them go through anti spam on my home server. Sidenote: I have anti spam on some email providers but I can’t redirect the one address to there as to use that accounts anti spam.

One solution would be to just get rid of this one account but I‘m a little anxious about the consequences since it is my oldest account with unthinkable amounts of accounts linked to it.

Does anyone have a similar scenario or an idea for a solution?

I know I could google it but I prefer to discuss it here:

There are many interesting discussions about antitrust, companies being jerks and corporats making the world worse.

I think it would be cool to have a couple „rogue“ lawyers band together and start making class action law suits against corporations and states for using/enabling anti consumer/anti competitive practices.

I have never been asked to participate in such lawsuits so I assume its not being optimally presented online so far.

Feel free to correct my impression here.

TL;DR: I think we need more ways to fight against anti consumer/privacy stuff in courts all over the world.

Hi there! I moderate a couple subreddits and would like to bring at least a copy of them to lemmy (so I can move them entirely if I decide/am forced to).

I have searched on google and github extensively but since I‘m quite new to python, frankensteining a working script is out of reach just now.

Since the pushshift api has stopped working afaik, most scripts I find will not work. I tried a couple, all with the same outcome so far.

I‘m in contact with a couple coder friends to find someone able to make this work and have at least some seed content (100 posts, all if possible) for these subreddits.

Does anyone here have a working script? And why are we not seeing massive copies of subreddit emerge? Has it just become impossible? (It should at least be possible to use a headless browser to copy the data by „manually“ sifting through subs.

Hope to find someone who can help. Have a good one! :)
