Granted, if it is a new activity or hobby where rookies don't destroy gear, it makes sense to me. It lets me skip the constant upgrading as my skills increase.
I'll buy a zillion dollar airbrush and learn to use it, and feel incentivised to take care of it. I didn't do the same with my first Jeep when I got into offloading. My first one was a cheap junker that I could roll if I did a rookie move.

We have a factory up the road that is the lifeblood of the town it is in (taxes and community support, but also just families supported). I could quote the number of people that work there (around 400 I think), but that town of 10k people would would vanish without it. The population would turn on someone promising to shut down the factory that only employs 400.
Multiply that scenario by...every rural town...and you get conciquencual numbers.

Everyone I know in tech uses android. People that want capable handheld devices choose android. People that want a basic device that does what the company says and nothing else go Apple. Even I suggest Apple to old people and luddites, it protects itself from them. Oh, and people easily manipulated by social pressures (OMG I need the right colored text bubble!) will deeply overpay for a subpar device.
