Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who faces federal and state charges for allegedly trying to overturn his 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden, insists he had "every right" to interfere in the election.

"Whoever heard you get indicted for interfering with a presidential election where you have every right to do it?" Trump said in a Fox News interview that aired on Sunday.

A federal indictment accuses Trump of defrauding the United States by preventing Congress from certifying Biden's victory and depriving voters of their right to a fair election. He faced a revised federal indictment last month accusing him of illegally trying to overturn his 2020 election loss.

Trump faces similar charges in Fulton County, Georgia, where he was also charged with racketeering, which is used to target members of organized crime groups and carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

So he's just blatantly admitting it now, huh?

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 57 points 2 months ago (2 children)

It must be incredibly exhausting lying all the time. The truth is easier

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 77 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's exhausting he never sees the consequences of it.

[–] VoterFrog@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well half the country either doesn't give a shit that he's doing it or are straight up happy about it. It's literally like watching Hitler rise to power.

[–] DancingBear@midwest.social 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

When Trump won in 2016, it was only with about 27% of the votes from eligible voters across the country.

A lot of people don’t vote

[–] VoterFrog@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

So they don't give a shit that he's doing it.

[–] DancingBear@midwest.social 3 points 2 months ago

lol ok fine

[–] lolcatnip@reddthat.com 10 points 2 months ago

It's only exhausting if you're trying to avoid getting caught in your lies. Trump doesn't care who knows he's lying.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 2 months ago

Why wouldn't he after being told he was allowed to do it by Supreme Court?

[–] st3ph3n@midwest.social 92 points 2 months ago

Hey, FBI? Look! Over here. He’s doing it again.

[–] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 78 points 2 months ago (1 children)

…and if I did, it wasn’t wrong.

[–] linearchaos@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

No, he's not that smooth. It's "and when I did" from the very beginning

[–] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 61 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well, at least he's learnt his lesson and been suitably punished so he's definitely not going to do anything like that again.

Probably not really needed but /s...

Ew.

Agreed. But even metaphorically, ew.

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 46 points 2 months ago

No one. No one "has heard" of it, because you're the first fucking person to do it, fuck wad.

[–] kikutwo@lemmy.world 45 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Confession before his next guilty conviction.

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 36 points 2 months ago (1 children)

"Your honor, I'd like to introduce into evidence Prosecutions Exhibit A, where the Defendant willfully admitted his crimes live on stage in front of hundreds of people."

[–] NJSpradlin@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

“Russia, if you’re listening…” he can say whatever he wants, no one cares. They’d rather complain about Kamala flip-flopping, which makes sense that she would change her stances to gather more support… or that she’s just a continuation of the current administration.

[–] scottmeme@sh.itjust.works 42 points 2 months ago

And he has every right to rot in jail

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 42 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

He's trying to frame this as an official presidential Act. Basically he's trying to go through the door the Supreme Court opened for him.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

A normal court would recognize that interfering with state elections isn’t part of his official duties.

But we don’t have a normal court.

[–] blattrules@lemmy.world 37 points 2 months ago

Maybe we shouldn’t let him get away with everything he does.

[–] vegeta@lemmy.world 37 points 2 months ago (1 children)

When you’re a dictator, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the polls. You can do anything.

[–] RecluseRamble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

Actually, "they" don't. Unless you have a really firm grip of the country, "they" will kill and replace you faster than Trump takes a dump.

ah. the ole sovoreign citizen president defense.

[–] Silentiea@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 months ago

ah. the ole sovoreign ~~citizen~~ president defense.

Just wants to be king.

[–] Soup@lemmy.cafe 28 points 2 months ago

Soooooo… this is an admission of guilt, right?

[–] APassenger@lemmy.world 24 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This could have been in trial by now is not for the misbehavior in the DA's office. This was far too important to go mixing relationships with I dunno... Democracy?

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

They would have found another way to stall. Really this should have gone to trial before the primaries even began, but then Trump wouldn't have been the nominee.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

No law. No order. Got it.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Anything you say can, and will, be used against you.

[–] furzegulo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 months ago

if only 😐

[–] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago

They probably got a heads up about something new in a case and are trying to get ahead of it with their base. Since we know the MAGA cultists don't consider time to be linear. The past can be in any order they want at the time. It's all just the past.

[–] TheWorldRolledMe@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Can someone remind us what stage this is? Something like "if I did do it, they deserved it" I think

[–] scytale@lemm.ee 10 points 2 months ago

Well there you go, bake him away toys!

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Doesn't the SCOTUS agree with him? Or did I misunderstand those clowns?

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It seems he is claiming he interfered with the election as an official action, so it checks out...

[–] Bridger@sh.itjust.works 21 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Except.... the executive branch has no role in elections. It cannot be an official action.

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 17 points 2 months ago

Sure it can, you just need to buy yourself a few Supreme Court Justices. They go cheap these days!

[–] NegativeLookBehind@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Is this not an admission of a fucking federal crime?

[–] Freefall@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

The line I have been hearing, and I don't like repeating it but you gotta know the talking points to counter them, is "he said he had every right to, but wouldn't stoop to the lows the dems would so he never acted on it".

It is stupid, but that is their logic/defense from what I am hearing....sad and weird.

[–] uberdroog@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Is it not interference just by announcing my candidacy? Is it not interference to just exist? There are only two states of being. Black and white. On and off. Ones and zeros. We either accept all things are interference or nothing is. I mean unless it's democrats and then it's definitely interference and must be stopped at all cost because socialism. ;)

[–] vaquedoso@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Infallible logic. Have you considered becoming president?

[–] xc2215x@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

He did not.

[–] poo@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Cool. Then Thomas Crooks had every right to try to blow Trump's brains out.
