Been homeless over 6 years. My social services agency, high turnover. Being female , almost all my case managers have been female, standard practice.

Out of 17 case managers, only 2 have been male. Female cms: detailed, logical, responsive, solution oriented, clear effective communication. Male cms, the opposite.

I try to communicate clearly, effectively, which is easy cuz autism, and the 2 male cms, i get constant 2nd guessing, passive-aggressive defensiveness. Get impression they're automatically assuming I don't think clearly, don't know what I'm saying. It's weird, and I can't figure out why.

I know not all men are the same. I'm not like all women. Have I just been unlucky with these 2 cms, or is there a gender aspect to this I'm not understanding? I'd like to learn.

I tried to open a bank account at a credit union while homeless. Had $42k on my direct express card, finally on SSI, lump sum was for the previous year while unable to work.

No debts, never used a credit card. Couldn't open a bank account. Had to go thru a program that assigned me a fake credit card debt that I had to pay off for 6 months to get my credit score high enough.

Credit scores are a scam.

Problem: I'm being driven mad by voices speaking to me thru white noise. Need white noise to sleep

Psychiatrist today suggested:

  1. normal human speech has typical rhythm, cadence
  2. fans, white noise audio files are always looped, rhythms in it
  3. brain is hearing those patterns as human voices
  4. I need to introduce staggered rhythms to disrupt

Possibilities:

  1. Willie Nelson, William Shatner speak with atypical cadence. Play at same time as white noise
  2. phone app that vibrates atypically
  3. machine in room that generates atypical rhythms, vibrations

Options, ideas? I'd like not to go further insane

I'm really into sci-fi. Constantly craving new content. Internet searches filled with if you like this sci-fi show, here are others you might like.

Farscape kept getting recommended. Muppets in space, how could I take that seriously?

Finally gave it a shot. Thank you, internet, for suggesting it repeatedly, awesome show.

There's a sleep disorder, diurnal, common for people with adhd. Their brains don't wake up, start functioning til 6pm, wide awake all night.

I'm so careful, courteous at night, super quiet, walking softly... then 6am, morning people wake, stomping, slamming, music blasting. So not fair.

I'll start. Apt next door is having a cockroach infected. 4 days ago, I was playing sims on my laptop, wearing my eyeglasses. Right lens got blurry, took off, huge cockroach was crawling across inside of lens. While I was wearing them. Freak out ensued.

I know it's gross, unhealthy, a stupid habit, makes no sense.

Trouble quitting cuz it's something to do with hands, fidgety, restless, oral fixation I think, and it gets me out of the house. Can't find a habit to replace it with.

Phone got stolen last year. New phone, installed instagram, tried to log into account, but locked out.

Instagram tech support told me I either had to: 1) take a photo of myself, they'd check if it matched any selfies in my account, or; 2) I had to associate my Facebook profile.

I'm security conscious enough to not post selfies online, nor use Facebook. Goodbye instagram.

Get bored with games SO quickly. Part of how to keep interest is figuring out on my own how the game works. And I can, on my own, figure out games, software, very quickly.

Too many phone games try to make you sit thru insufferable tedious tutorials. So you're not only depriving me the chance to figure out on my own, you're also insulting my intelligence. Any game does this, instant uninstall.

They're self aware. Understand the difference between subjectivity and objectivity. When they encounter someone different, they don't judge, see it as a learning opportunity. Put thought into their words. If you ask them a question, you can see them carefully thinking about it.

For me, its Xena.

Few years back, height of covid epidemic, was living in homeless shelters. Overcrowded slums, everyone miserable, yelling, screaming, fights, abuse, rage. At one point, could feel the anger building in me. Powerless, a victim, desire for retribution. What good was trying to be better person, when all it meant was people walking over me.

Started rewatching xena, hadn't in years. Big message of the show: when surrounded by hate, violence, it's tempting to give in, to not be a victim. But you have a choice, to not continue the cycle, to make a better world. I so needed to hear that message at that time in my life.

What tv show helped you?

Yesterday, browsing wikipedia, stumbled on articles that talked about this very thing, on how Russia took advantage of mental health systems. They started to classify nonconforming, rebels as mentally ill. A frequently used diagnosis was sluggish schizophrenia. Anyone who was socially awkward, thought differently got this diagnosis. Cuz if someone is questioning our government, they must be sick in the head

They used this heavily for decades to discredit political rivals, forcible confinement, lock them away, work camps. Think gulag archipelago.

On SSI right now. My art has exploded recently because I have a lot of time. Every day, at least one complete piece. Still pretty poor, struggling financially. But oil pastels, gesso, baby oil, cotton balls, piece of plastic... because free time, I'm excitedly experimenting, create pieces deeply layered, sculptural. Was never possible when employed.

Living in cruddy apt. Anger management neighbor slamming doors constantly. Bed shakes, waking me up.

Previously, what works is anti vibration layers under bed. Prosourcefit exercise puzzle mats, quietwalk flooring underlayment, felt rug pad with rubber backing, thick cut high pile rug, anti vibration pads.

That normally works. But not with this insane dude. Can I build some sort of platform under bed, on rollers, like how buildings cope with earthquakes?

I'm looking for creative engineering solutions, out of the box ideas.

I'm tomboyish queer chick, probably wouldve seriously considered transitioning if born in later decades. Get called sir, man a lot. Doesn't bother me. I got used to playing mmorpgs, everyone is assumed to be male, I never took issue with it, sometimes had fun with it.

My understanding is... if you're a minority with special requests. You're gonna know people might be confused. Don't judge harshly. Give people a chance to understand. If you want to be referred to a certain way, it's up to you to say that up front. And be prepared not everyone will be receptive.

I'm not speaking for everyone, or people wanting any, all pronouns used. This is more for the people wanting to accommodate, worried they'll offend.

Was gifted kid, always the smartest, highest test scores. Then I got older. I know I'm above average intelligence in lot of things. But smart enough to know how stupid I can be, that I have lots of faults, limitations. There are many kinds of intelligence, and always more to learn

Lemmy has been helping me lots. Been feeling so isolated, this is the first social online platform I've been able to participate in years. Talking to actual humans. Being able to help other humans.

I have adhd. When I can internet on my laptop, I read fast, massive info processing, able to rapidly research vast amounts of data, mind can work high speed.

Right now, I have no internet. Trying to accomplish anything on my tiny phone, brain can't compute, carving on stone tablets slow.

I'm trying to learn to buy groceries, cook for myself again.

Can't afford to buy and keep produce. Limited cookware. So, any recipe telling me to crush garlic, dice onions, etc, can't do.

Need budget, ghetto, for people on a fixed income, easy no frills way to make diy tomato paste pasta sauce.

Good suggestions so far. Tks. I have 1 bowl, 1 plate, 1 spoon, 1 fork, 1 butter knife ; 1 small sauce pan; Only stores nearby are corner stores. Hardly any produce. Having to make due with what you can find in a liquor store.
