Just saw it today with my daughter… great great movie. Definitely deserves the hype.

[–] Sooperstition@lemmy.one 26 points 1 year ago

But is it Kenough?

Go woke, go ~~broke~~ rich?

[–] neptune@dmv.social 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It turns outs "woke" doesn't have a definition nor really a unifying theme, and that marketing a film to 50+% of the population can actually work.

[–] some_guy@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

I’ve asked dozens of republicans and not one of them can answer the question: “what is woke?”

[–] LollerCorleone@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, Greta Gerwig just completely invalidated that right wing slogan.

[–] JonVonBasslake@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

Nah, it's been invalidated several times and yet they hopelessly cling to it as if it still meant something. And if some LGBTQ+ friendly film happens to bomb or at least not make that much profit, they will parrot it once again with further gusto.

I thought it was pretty fun and enjoyable. My GF thought it was a bit boring though. Not for everyone surely, and I think it could have been better but still a solid 7/10 by me

[–] CheshireSnake@iusearchlinux.fyi 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just finished watching it maybe ~2 hours ago. I agree with the 7/10. There were parts that were boring (and imo cringey), but overall it was interesting. Nothing game breaking and could be better, but still a good watch.

[–] HidingCat@kbin.social 0 points 1 year ago

6/10 for me, but yes, it's fun and gets uneven, with said cringey bits.

[–] seacocker@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It could have done without the car chase Chevy ad, but I thought overall it was far above my expectations. Not surprised it's doing well, the whole movie theatre were laughing out loud.

Is that the worst of it? Maybe I should see it... I mean I liked the first Michael Bay Transformers movie despite the ludicrous product placement.

[–] greensage@lib.lgbt 3 points 1 year ago

It's closer to the first Lego movie than Transformers. If that helps

[–] livus@kbin.social 13 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Would like to see that gross adjusted for inflation. But either way, incredibly solid box office.

Have to admit I kind of want to see it.

[–] moobythegoldensock@geddit.social 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Adjusted for inflation it still made over $1B.

[–] livus@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

I mean so we can compare it to box office of all time. Haven't seen a source though.

Wonder Woman would have grossed over $1B if adjusted for inflation. Barbie has already passed its total inflation-adjusted gross, though.

[–] WarmSoda@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Look at the last movie that broke a record. The inflation conversion probably hasn't changed much since then.

[–] livus@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Nothing's cracked the top 10 lifetime interest adjusted grosses in a long time. Our last top 20 film was in 2015.

If @moobythegoldensock is right, this sounds like this could be a new top 10 entry, will have to wait and see.

[–] lemann@lemmy.one 4 points 1 year ago

I plan to see it as soon as it comes out of cinemas 🚢🧲

Thankfully haven't seen any spoilers or memes yet, unlike with some of the Marvel franchise movies

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is anyone surprised?

Every time the was a movie that appealed a lot to women, it broke all box office records. Just look at Titanic.

[–] livus@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

As of last year, Gone With the Wind was still the highest grossing film ever made once we factor in inflation.

And that's a melodrama with a female protagonist.

[–] MargotRobbie@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Do it. Do it.

[–] some_guy@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well it’s not something I like so what arbitrary metric can I use to dismiss this accomplishment?

Ugh, there's that mean-spirited, "let's assume the worst about people" attitude I hoped we left at reddit.

I'm a cinephile with an interest in film history and I want to know where the new film stands on this list.

If it knocks out Gone With The Wind, that has real implications not just for cinema history, but as an indicator of the health of the movie theater industry.

I also stated that I want to see the film, so assuming I'm trying to "dismiss" it isn't reasonable.

strange that two weeks ago the opening was like 150 mil a giant success, but maybe that just goes to predict or correlate with this number in some way. Giant opening means great buzz, means more sales. etc. guess it worked out. I need to watch it but probably will just do so at home.

[–] ricecooker@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I read somewhere else that no one expected this movie to do so well. This and the Taylor Swift Eras tour is killing it!!
