Why can't we just own games anymore? Sure it'd be cool to have your service available on all devices. But once it reaches a critical mass and kills off competitors and other ways of getting games, expect enshittification to ensue, subscriber costs and advertising going way up. Just look at what's happening with every tv/movie streaming platform now. I'm guessing games you can only access via game pass and can't purchase separately at all are going to be coming at some point too.

I’m fully with you. I hate how everything’s headed towards perpetually renting and the services getting worse the second other options are squeezed out.

You can buy 100% of the games on gamepass. I fully expected gamepass to get more expensive over time but I’ll be surprised if Microsoft removes the ability to buy games. They seem perfectly happy to take your money however you’re willing to give it. I see their re-listing of games on steam as a sign they aren’t interested in killing game purchasing. Fully admit I could be wrong though.

They haven't done it yet. It seems to be the natural order of these subscription services though. I worry it's only a matter of time.

You could still buy all the movies when netflix first started picking up steam too.

Getting harder and harder to do that now that streaming cancer has festered in allcthe major movie makers.

Game pass is video game netflix.

Then they disappear over generations. Nintendo has turned systems off already. Arcade games I bought on my 360 cannot be downloaded on my Series S.

The quality has already tanked. Halo Infinite has ruined the franchise harder than Halo 5 did before it. And then they took out the multiplayer to make it a shitty F2P. So the game you get with gamepass (or buy) is just a mostly empty sandbox with a shoestring of a story.

I really wish we just had a system where you purchase a game once, and then you have that game everywhere it's available, forever...

This but the system is PC and you can just have PCs in multiple form factors. Oh... Wait.

It was on my win11 pro login screen this morning at work... Fuck that shit.

There’s a way to turn that shit off, but I can’t remember how. My computer does it too, and it makes me mad every time I turn it on.

Yet they don't seem willing to put forth any effort for Linux support. I've been a gamepass subscriber for years but I'm on the edge of canceling it because it's useless on my Steam Deck.
