From our perspective, people with this ability would more likely:

  • age much faster
  • never sleep
  • have extreme levels of social intelligence
  • talk very precisely
  • learn very fast

Why are time-pocket species unheard of in space and magic world fiction?

Hermione had her plot-breaking time turner thing,

  • she's a fast learner
  • she does talk precisely
  • not sure about social intelligence, but she sure is book smart
  • she probably slept, but she's one who would stay up late studying something.
  • Based on the movie, she certainly aged faster than Harry and Ron.

By your definition I will confidently claim that Hermione was (artificially) a time-pocket species for a year.

I think Stargate had a couple time-pocket episodes, but I can't remember exactly. There is also a graphic novel built around a character that stops time with orgasms.

That was it! I couldn't think of the name, thank you.

stopping time with orgasms

How ridiculous and impractical that would be, for it would make such a mess every time, both physically and emotionally.

That sounds an awful lot like the Salarians, from Mass Effect. At least 3/5. Probably not "never sleep"

Hyperbolic time chamber, a procrastinator's dream.

A need to not be perpetually connected to everyone via technology and be able to slowly and deliberately focus on your own interests. This feels like a human need that we haven't noticed we lost.

While yes, that's cool, I'm sure I'd drag it out of proportion and would gradually become insane. Why prioritizing stuff and setting boundaries if you can do everything for everyone?

I always thought that looked appealing in Dragon Ball Z. I mean, I doubt I'd spend that time training for hand to hand combat like they did, but their weird kinda separate dimension time doesn't pass dojo thing looked pretty dope.

I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard large amounts of DMT can do this. But do be aware that it might also have some other effects.

Well, I mean, time dilation does it. A clock in a stronger field of gravity would tick much slower than one in a weaker field.

Only real problem is where to define the field and how much you have to weaken it.

But, if you were to say invent inverse gravity or antigravity, you could project an anti-gravity field potentially strong enough to slow time outside it to a standstill.

Edit: It's more related to the gravitational potential, but an antigravity field accomplishes the same thing

it's not that I need a quiet day or a day off exactly; it's that I need a pocket of time that exists entirely outside of linear time as we know it that would allow me to get things done without time passing in the real world, and frankly, I don't think that's too much to ask.

[–] iamdisillusioned@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago

Oh so you need a time dilation potion.

Really just morphs the troubles into balancing work (for food/energy consumption), and "premature" death (can you imagine your spouse living their whole life in a day/week?).
