Sweatshops are bad. But can you imagine what sort of horror show of efficiency if you told an industrial engineer, “ethics and safety don’t matter, we are literally pulling people off the street to do the job”

We do what we must
Because... we can.
Automation and controls engineer here, and I would get fired so fast from that because I saw what you wrote and what I actually read was, "make the safeties and guarding as robust and expensive as possible since all the workers will be untrained and inexperienced."
If you want to see some scary shit, tell me I have a fully autonomous zone fully enclosed in three feet of concrete and I'm going to find out exactly how fast these ABB IRB 4400's can move before they rip out their mounting bolts.

Story checks out.
Yeah I was watching an automation tech working on a cell that moves sheets of glass a while ago. He was done and I was bored so I watching him wrap things up and he offered to show me how fast they can move. He turned the speed from its production value to like 50% of its max acceleration and holy fuck those things can move. I was blown away by how fast it was while not being anywhere near the firmware max speeds.
I've seen what Minecraft players do to villagers
if you told an industrial engineer, “ethics and safety don’t matter,
I was considering tipping off the FBI until around the second paragraph when I realized this was Dwarf Fortress. without context, this was.. disturbing to read.
I thought this one was going to be the one about mermaid bone farming.
It ends up being horrifically inefficient because training takes time and demoralizing the workers creates poor outcomes.
Typical Y Combinator post.
