Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.

One other person mentioned it but I'll put Tom Goes to the Mayor out there too.
I feel like if you didn't grow up in the rust belt or some other dead part of the USA without anything but public access TV, a lot of the humor is lost on you.
But for those few who did....it was nice to feel seen.
TGTTM is the beginning of a vast, graceful arc that leads eventually, inevitably, to Check It Out With Scott Clam.
Fritz the cat! Also non animated but muppet-like Meet the Feebles.
Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.
HEEEEEYYY Mister Passer-By! Crest-on-Birdman's-HELMET!
Ongezellig!!!
Venture Bros is probably the best I've seen, but I also enjoyed
- Primal
- The Tick
- Amazing Screw-On Head (only the pilot ever got made, but if you like it check out Creature Commandos)
- Megas XLR
Also if you have kids and want to watch stuff with them that isn't brain rot, try Samurai Jack, Clone Wars (Tartakovsky's original), and Reboot.
Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon and 3-South
Danger Mouse, international spy and crime fighting white rodent with an eye patch. Old British cartoon from the early 80's.
pulls out a list of Adult Swim cartoons
slaps them on the table
I also went to college in the '00s.
Superjail. Imagine if Willy Wonka ran a prison instead of a chocolate factory.
Oh, I remember that one! I think I still have it...
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned The Critic yet. It was a good show that was screwed over by two networks. Another one is Dilbert, which was based on the comic strip. I think Scott Adams was less involved with it than the strip which made it better (plus he wasn't as insane back then).
Perfect hair forever! "Hamburgers should be high"
I miss oblongs. Sucks it only lasted like 2 season.
Mission hill was good too, Daria style
People Watching
That one was perfection. Rowntree is a really good artist in any medium.
I've at least heard of 13 out of the 27 listed. Only seriously watched like 3 of them though.
Okay I haven't heard of a lot here.
I don't know if it's the most obscure or deep cut but my favorite vote goes to Moral Orel. It gets dark in a way that doesn't look like it.
Billy and Mandy and Duck Dodgers imo don't belong to this list
Surprised you didn't add the MTV one such as AEon Flux, The Head, The Maxx. Aeon in particular is a favorite of mine, watching it is very wtf. I think it should belong to this list.
The Brothers Grunt
Adding a few.
The Head, Liquid Television, The Maxx, Tom goes to the Mayor, Tripping the Rift, Primer, Tom and the Devil, The Critic, Sealab 2021, Frisky Dingo, Primal, Mission Hill , Friday: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Aeon Flux, Assy McGee , Aqua Teen (not sure if this counts, honestly), Perfect Hair Forever, Superjail, Happy Tree Friends, Venture Bros - God tier I'm sure I'll think of others
Aeon Flux
Oh man, that was Heavy Metal tier crazy nonsense.
Drawn Together was hilarious. It ended because sponsors were too uncomfortable advertising alongside it. It could never get made today.
Did you ever see the movie? It's basically the creators bitching because they were shunned for the content while South Park was lauded because it came with a heavy-handed moral.
I had no idea. I'm gonna watch that tonight. Thanks!
Xavier: Renegade Angel, dunno if it counts because it's computer animation but some good TV-MA psychedelic social satire
I don't see Aeon Flux mentioned yet. The Maxx is very good too. Duckman I remember being hilarious, but I dunno if starring Jason Alexander counts as a deep cut.
Duckman was pretty mainstream when it aired, but it's been largely forgotten. Ahead of its time, humor-wise.
12 oz. Mouse. Twelve is also the number of fans the show has.
Edit: shoutout to !12ozmouse@adultswim.fan where I am the only person who posts.
Fritz the Cat. Not to be confused with Felix the Cat. Fritz the Cat was, essentially, an adults only version of Felix. And by adult only I mean pornographic.
I'm also not seeing anyone mention Mission Hill so throw that onto the pile. It's hella good.
Also Clone High.
A lot of things listed here are earler works from well-known creators, like Clone High (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump St, Sealab 2021 (Archer), Bravest Warriors (Adventure Time), Home Movies (Metalocalypse, Squid Billies).
Extra shoutout to China, IL. Love all the oldet Professir Bros. stuff on YouTube, like Roleplaying Tornament and Queeblo that I still sing all the time
The old Brad Neely stuff is really special.
I think doing the serialized China IL broke him somehow...but the old stuff is some of my favorite media. There's just such charm to this neurodivergent harmless manchild main character.
Turns out, we were both in love with the same fresh ghost.
