[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago

I only repeated the order in my head 20+ times before getting up to the counter. Why‽

Memory recall is the worst for me. Long-term or short-term, cognitive; all bad.

  • Did you remember to grab your laptop on your way to work? Nope.
  • Do you remember going to the movie theater, sitting in your seat, and watching the new animated Adams Family movie with your family? Nope.
  • Did you move that load of towels from the washer to the dryer four days ago? Nope.
  • Did you remember your wife's name after fifteen years of marriage when introducing her to your new coworkers? Nope.
  • Do you remember the word for that super simple thing? It's literally the opposite of down, and you should definitely not be stumbling on this word because we're on a conference call. Nope.

I absolutely hate it when my language center segfaults and I feel like I have aphasia. I will go through periods where it happens a concerning amount, and then back to a sprinkle of dysfunction. Forgetting simple words or names of people you have known for years is unsettling. I sometimes get really scared and panic if it happens a lot. Trying to explain to your coworkers on a conference call that your brain isn't functioning correctly isn't the most comfortable experience.

Trying to explain to your coworkers on a conference call that your brain isn’t functioning correctly isn’t the most comfortable experience.

Just tell them that they are dramatic pauses!

It worked once for me, but I think the person who laughed also has ADHD.

I have said "my brain isn't braining" several times, people have always understood.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago

Ah damn. That sucks. How do you cope with that?

[–] stepan@lemmy.cafe 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

With every ADHD meme I'm self-diagnosing with it more and more. Just today I had to say "I don't know what I'm trying to say" in the middle of sentence twice.

A lot of these seem just general human things tbf

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

When you feel that way, try imagining the relevant symptom ramped to an extreme.

E.g. with OCD. It's normal to worry you might have left the stove on. It's not normal to have to check 13 times and touch each knob.

56k modem noises

I particularly remember the heart-dropping feeling of the repeated changes in pitch as it negotiated a lower baud rate to account for the shitty wiring my dad DIY'd.
