Summary

Trump and Vance urged Republicans to force a government shutdown instead of passing a bipartisan stopgap funding bill, accusing Democrats of pushing “giveaways” and rejecting a debt ceiling increase.

The move against the stopgap funding bill comes less than 3 days before the government is set to run out of money on Friday.

Their stance follows Elon Musk’s social media threats to fund primary challengers against Republicans who support the bill.

The funding package, which includes disaster relief and farm aid, faces opposition, with critics warning this move could disrupt essential services.

Musk has suggested the government remain closed until Trump takes office in January.

Shut it down and keep it shutdown for 4 years.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 87 points 1 week ago (2 children)

as terrible as that usually is, that might be the best case scenario this go round

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Except they still expect us to pay in while they do jack shit.

[–] MyOpinion@lemm.ee 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Their closed they can’t collect anything.

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

I wish that were the case but from experience, it isn't.

IRS are absolutely essential workers

~~Yeah but they don't get paid while it's shutdown.~~

Nvm

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Except they do. They still get pay and the government still processes revenue. The government shutdowns have been, "we aren't doing shit for you, but you still have to pay up!"

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 4 points 1 week ago

Yeah, my bad. I must have misremembered that or confused it with something else.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Depends if they sell off all the assets. Then there is literally nothing to come back to.

It'd take more than 4 years to do that.

This shit is so backwards. People are getting blackmailed competitively by this guy in broad daylight. I know it died long ago, but it was the death of liberty when we introduced MTX/P2W politics—fuck Citizens United.

[–] MyOpinion@lemm.ee 54 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Citizen United was a very key moment. It seems now you can just pay people to vote for your side through a sweepstakes. Sickening.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 week ago

It wasn't even a sweepstakes. The winners were decided before hand. It was a scam to get people to sign up to a mailing list.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 80 points 1 week ago

Ah, President Musk calling the shots I see.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 77 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Looks like they're gonna get it.

It's remarkable how out in the open Musk's purchase of the Republican party was.

The buying part is nothing new, to be clear. Just surprising they were so honest about it.

A criminal being able to run for and become president does have an emboldening effect

[–] ech@lemm.ee 69 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I remember when shut downs were a reason to reach compromise at nearly any cost. Now these shit heels are demanding a shut down because they feel like it.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 21 points 1 week ago

Look! Government doesn’t work! See?

[–] kalleboo@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Because they know they can blame it on the other party. And people will eat it up.

[–] treadful@lemmy.zip 56 points 1 week ago

Their stance follows Elon Musk’s social media threats to fund primary challengers against Republicans who support the bill.

This should be a crime. And congress members need to grow some balls.

"Their stance follows Elon Musk’s social media threats to fund primary challengers against Republicans who support the bill."

This is his go-to thing now and it's fucking infuriating that no Magoo even recognizes what he's doing... This mother fucker owns Congress. He's literally threatening to buy the next Congress that will be obedient to him.

Where's your fucking representation Magoos? Going to throw a tea party revolt over this or just put on your kneepads and chapstick for the ol' musk stick?

FFS I wish this guy would meet Luigi already.

Oh what a wonderful time to be a federal employee. I just love guessing whether or not I'm working or getting paid based on the whims of geriatric right-wing nutjobs.

Republicans - “we’re better at finance and won’t raise the debt”

Also republicans - Donald Trump Built a National Debt So Big (Even Before the Pandemic) That It’ll Weigh Down the Economy for Years

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I thought he was the First Lady. Now Elon's the president?

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

"President Musk and First Lady Trump" has a nice ring to it. Surely, that won't hurt Trump's ego enough to make Elon's campaign investment backfire ;)

[–] Xanis@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thinly veiled. Trump will claim the shut down is a recess.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 1 week ago

No, he wants the shutdown to happen right now to blame Biden for it.

[–] Geobloke@lemm.ee 6 points 1 week ago

This is musk testing loyalty, if congress wants its independence they'll tell him to get fucked
