Smart to put IDELAND and IEELAND next to each other so the programmers and electrical engineers can work closely together.

[-] ScreamingFirehawk@feddit.uk 16 points 8 months ago

There's a first time for everything I guess

[-] TheYear2525@lemmy.world 6 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

First time since the 70s, I suppose. Though there weren’t IDEs then.

[-] Moc@lemmy.world 10 points 8 months ago

I don’t even work together with other programmers

[-] XTornado@lemmy.ml 4 points 8 months ago

Unpair Programming FTW!

[-] Excrubulent@slrpnk.net 50 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

This means we can extrapolate the location of Izeland.

[-] stebo02@sopuli.xyz 11 points 8 months ago

After that there's Jaeland.

[-] Excrubulent@slrpnk.net 4 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

So you're saying any word in the latin alphabet can be projected onto this map. The fabled land of Icecream is on this very map. We could do so much with this technology.

[-] yabai@lemmy.world 19 points 8 months ago

Why is there an added U in Iqueland?

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 46 points 8 months ago

Because you always put U after Q silly.

[-] I_Miss_Daniel@kbin.social 10 points 8 months ago

Qantas qat and qaid being a few rare exceptions. (Qantas is technically an a abbreviation though.)

[-] MissJinx@lemmy.world 5 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)
[-] boogetyboo@aussie.zone 5 points 8 months ago

Qantas is actually an acronym

[-] I_Miss_Daniel@kbin.social 6 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Good point. It's both.

I had to DDG that one.

"... an acronym is a specific type of abbreviation formed from the first letters of a multi-word term, name, or phrase, with those letters pronounced together as one term. OPEC—or the O(rganization of) P(etroleum) E(xporting) C(ountries)—is an acronym because we pronounce it as one word, oh-pek."

[-] boogetyboo@aussie.zone 4 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Huh, interesting. In my mind an abbreviation was either a truncation or maybe a portmanteau. Didn't think it was an accurate description of acronyms or initialisms.

Also I said 'actually' in my response, please forgive me. I had an upwards lilt in my head voice which would have negated any condescension in person, but on reading what I said, I just came across as a regular, pedant fuckwit.

[-] I_Miss_Daniel@kbin.social 4 points 8 months ago

No worries at all. Both are words I hardly every use, and I was happy to be corrected if I was wrong.

The written word can be misinterpreted easily since it doesn't easily carry the audible nuances of the spoken word, or the visual cues of the speaker. We're always learning hey.

[-] aBundleOfFerrets@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 months ago

please just use “search”

[-] jaybone@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago
[-] stebo02@sopuli.xyz 2 points 8 months ago

yeah that's why it took me longer to figure out

[-] Kushia@lemmy.ml 16 points 8 months ago

I may be stupid but I don't understand what this image is trying to communicate to me. It just looks like a line between two islands with a bunch of nonsensical words to me.

[-] Brekky@lemmy.world 24 points 8 months ago

Its Iceland-> Ireland but working its way through the alphabet for the second letter, so d,e,f,g,h... etc.

[-] Kushia@lemmy.ml -5 points 8 months ago

I see.. but I still don't get the joke.

It's like saying Austria and Australia have similar names you but just gotta change the letters a bit.

[-] KaleDaddy@reddthat.com 21 points 8 months ago

Youre overthinking it. Thats the joke. Its funny because its a silly proposal of how it got named

[-] flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works 4 points 8 months ago

To be fair, the oz version does appear to have potential

[-] Master@lemm.ee 1 points 8 months ago

But using us abbreviated state names...

[-] Master@lemm.ee 13 points 8 months ago

[-] Masimatutu@lemm.ee 8 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Didn't know Rockall is actually called Ileland

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 12 points 8 months ago

It is now and you don't get to change it.

[-] Sotuanduso@lemm.ee 3 points 8 months ago

Well it is one, isn't it?

[-] TotallyNotSpez@lemm.ee 6 points 8 months ago

Iqueland is very scenic.

[-] ColdWater@lemmy.ca 6 points 8 months ago

I prefer SataLand myself

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 5 points 8 months ago

Ijeland ... aka ... Atlantis in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean

I knew it!

[-] Ryan213@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

Makes sense!
