Summary

Senate Republicans are largely opposed to confirming Matt Gaetz as attorney general, with more than 30 reportedly considering him unqualified.

Gaetz, nominated by President-elect Trump, faces resistance due to past controversies, including a DOJ investigation into alleged sex trafficking, which he denies.

Senators are calling for the release of a House Ethics Committee report on Gaetz, which may include allegations of misconduct.

Trump’s team remains confident despite concerns over Gaetz’s confirmation prospects. Some Republicans warn against a recess appointment, fearing it would weaken the Cabinet’s credibility.

Didn’t the Senate Republicans say something to the effect that Roe v. Wade would never be overturned?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

They say a lot of things.

They also dismiss anything horrible Trump wants to do as him telling a joke until he does it.

Don't worry, the spineless cunts will all fall in line when the time comes, like the good little fascists they are.

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 33 points 1 month ago

Bullshit. They'll furrow their brows for moderates, then give the disgusting MAGAts anything they want. Party over country...

Memories are really short apparently.

Recess appointments are "on the table."

How do you even explain this to one’s daughter? To trust a system to keep them safe - the basic role of government. Yet here is a government flat out okaying rape culture.

He will be confirmed. This is just more media normalization and hopium that things are normal.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 14 points 1 month ago

I don't have a good answer....

Maybe tell them not to trust anyone or anything. Make connections with people and maybe trust them. Any organization with power can be corrupted. It is a harsh reality, but people blame women for being raped. I talked to people (women) I worked with about women coming out with allegations too late. Women attack other women for waiting too long before reporting being a victim.

Idk how to fix it. It's just fucked. And yes some women lie and ruin innocent men's life. It doesn't mean we should never believe women. How do we make the individual safe while teaching them to interact with people that might have bad intentions?

I wish I had an answer for you. I'm lucky enough to have dual citizenship, so I am getting my daughter out of the country while I can. I wish others were so lucky.

All good, I’m just postulating and recall your post from yesterday.

I’m Canadian with grown daughters. Unfortunately Canada will pivot hard right next election as well, but unlikely to this point of insanity. But we will still follow along like a lost Shepherd.

[–] sparky@lemmy.federate.cc 4 points 1 month ago

Likely so but your Conservative Party hasn’t shown the fascist cancer of our Republicans. I haven’t seen Poilievre say anything to suggest he wants to end democracy or tear down the government. That’s a pretty fucking low bar but at least you’re not at that level.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago

Not sure when you're next election is, but if Trump fucks us hard enough between now and then, I could see Canada potentially swinging the other way as a reaction... Maybe that's unrealistic.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

All I can say is I wish you (and us all) luck.

[–] TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social 10 points 1 month ago

They did it with Brett Kavanaugh last time, and Republicans put Clarence Thomas on the bench also after trying to suppress his sexual harassment allegations, and made it a big show pretending they didn't understand.

Trump is surrounding himself with really the worst people this time around, because guess who doesn't try and pump the brakes when you're asking if you can use the US military to put down protestors, your sexual assault buddies. =(

[–] eran_morad@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago (2 children)

100% he’s confirmed. Take dat shit to the bank.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago

I would say that 100% he becomes the AG. Whether or not that's through the confirmation process is yet to be seen.

[–] hombre_fundido@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah, as if they have any principles to stand by. Our country is being run by psychopaths.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 month ago

I mean... They will though right? We've all seen this movie before.

[–] Corigan@lemm.ee 15 points 1 month ago

I've heard this line before.....

[–] Lexam@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

They'll just make him "Acting" Attorney General.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago

~~a majority of~~all republican senators will vote to confirm the waste of organic matter anyway.

[–] Badeendje@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

No need to confirm anyone. Mike Johnson is in Trumps pocket and just send the Senate on recess so trump can appoint who he wants.

That way they can all wash their hands while doing nothing about it.

[–] oh_@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

He will be confirmed. Votes will somehow come together and a few folks will make “statements” about it.
