leaving a message just because it's important that stallman knows there are many people wishing him well, and how much respect there's for him. I kindly invite others to leave a message as well.

RMS, you are a world class hero. It scares me to imagine a world where one needs to audit on perpetuity or reverse engineer everything just to have a little peace of mind. I wish for activists with your passion and energy in every field of knowledge.

[–] drbi@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

With love, A linux user.

[–] xuxebiko@kbin.social 49 points 11 months ago

Fuck cancer. Get well soon, Richard.

[–] TheWoozy@lemmy.world 44 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

RMS is the patron saint (and prophet) of open source. Like all saints he can be an A-hole zealot.

I want to thank Richard for being the a-hole zealot the world has needed. The whole F-ing world is in debt to his relentless, tireless work.

[–] nehal3m@sh.itjust.works 34 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I don’t want to be pedantic in reply to a heartfelt comment but since I believe Richard himself would say this: he advocates for free software which is fundamentally different from open source.

You're right, and anyone who thinks otherwise should check out Revolution OS. He speaks about it in detail.

Here is an alternative Piped link(s):

Piped is a privacy-respecting open-source alternative frontend to YouTube.

I'm open-source; check me out at GitHub.

Good open-source bot!

[–] Touching_Grass@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago (1 children)

He's someone I think who will truly be appreciated when its to late. Like when we're getting our amazon anal trackers inserted by our yearly google healthcare visit we'll have a moment that we should have appreciated him morw

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 10 points 11 months ago (1 children)

We won't be licensed to have that thought due to the Musk chips in our brains, without which we will be unable to get health insurance.

legit made me very sad when I saw the pics, wish he gets well soon!

[–] XEAL@lemm.ee 22 points 11 months ago

He always looked like a FOSS Santa, this is really weird.

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 32 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Fun fact, Richard Stallman named one of the FOSS games I worked on. I wish the very best for him.

[–] darth_tiktaalik@lemmy.ml 15 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 27 points 11 months ago

Indeed. It used to be called OSARE (Open source action rpg engine) until RMS pointed out it should be Free/Libre not Open Source. So we changed the name!

[–] makeasnek@lemmy.ml 27 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Sad news about a pioneer of internet freedom. He has earned his fair share of criticism and detractors, but he has also given a lot to the Linux and free software ecosystem. I personally run !boinc@sopuli.xyz on all my rigs to support open-source cancer research, I hope one day we can finally cross cancer off the list of humankind's foes.

If the human body or cancer were Free and Open Source, it'd be much easier to cure too.
Fucking closed source human DNA.

[–] Kosta554@feddit.nl 25 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I really hope he gets well.

[–] yoz@aussie.zone 8 points 11 months ago

Why bad things always happen to good people.

[–] dan@lemmy.fdr8.us 24 points 11 months ago

If you happen to read this, Mr. Stallman, I wish you you a swift and full recovery. We need more in this world like you. Thank you for all that you have done for the world and your tireless advocacy of Free Software!

[–] Franzia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 11 months ago

I hope this fucking legend gets well and keeps carrying on.

[–] theshatterstone54@feddit.uk 22 points 11 months ago

While everyone changes the world ever so slightly in their own way, Stallman is one of these individuals that actually affected the entire world through their achievements, changing it for the better. I sincerely hope he continues being there for decades to come. I want to hear him at GNU's 50th Anniversary!!! Richard, if you're reading this, I hope you get better. You deserve to live and to promote free software for many more decades!

Seeing how he looks now is incredibly sad. I really hope he makes it though this.

[–] Touching_Grass@lemmy.world 20 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Would be cool to do some kind of thing online to let him know how we all appreciate him.

I just don't know what that would look like. Does anyone have any suggestions?

[–] matengor@lemmy.ml 12 points 11 months ago

Why not here? This is a Foss platform. Get better, RMS!

[–] lntl@lemmy.ml 17 points 11 months ago

RMS! RMS! RMS!

GNU ! GNU! GNU!

[–] ThatFembyWho@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 11 months ago

Gotta say the older I get, the more I appreciate what he stands for. Especially as we spiral toward a dystopian future where privacy is suspect and surveillance is everywhere, FOSS is the only way to retain control over our digital lives.

[–] GnuLinuxDude@lemmy.ml 15 points 11 months ago

🫡 stay strong, Mr. Stallman

[–] roguetrick@kbin.social 14 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

He looks so smooth. 5 year survival for that is pretty good, and at his age he'll likely make a good run of it.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 12 points 11 months ago

One human spirit. Well wishes.

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 12 points 11 months ago

cri At least the prognosis is good.

[–] PuppyOSAndCoffee@lemmy.ml 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Keep fighting RMS and beat it.

[–] pfannkuchen_gesicht@lemmy.one 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Why would you wanna fight RMS? I mean some of his views are controversial, but he ain't a bad guy.

[–] PuppyOSAndCoffee@lemmy.ml 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

lol - gotta keep the man sharp

btw - who downvotes ppl (you + me ) praising a guy for battling cancer, because that's what it is ... Cancer strips us of our humanity - doesn't matter who you are, it reduces you. And the only way to live is to keep a positive attitude, do everything medicine has to beat it into submission and see that next sunrise.

I have always liked RMS because he praised solutions to problems, hope there is someone else to carry his torch.

[–] lud@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

We should stop saying that people should fight cancer, since they can't.

There is nothing a person can do against cancer except do what they're told by the doctors.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jan/28/stop-fighting-cancer-ordinary-illness-language

Do you have a cancer? Or are you “a brave hero fighting against the demon foe”? Have you something in your body that needs removing, or are you a heroic victim in a war you may “win or lose”? A poll by Macmillan Cancer Support has found that many people with cancer are fed up with the language of war. They want to be treated like anyone else who is ill. They want to discuss their treatment with a doctor. It is as simple as that.

Anyone with experience of a cancer knows well the lugubrious looks you get. You poor thing. We are so sorry. How long have “they” given you? Be brave. Be positive. Fight back. Don’t give in and “lose”. It suggests you lacked courage and were “beaten”.

I suggest you read the rest of the article since it's pretty short.

[–] andruid@lemmy.ml 3 points 11 months ago

The fighting stance is how I treat all illnesses, it suggests both a need for support and, through discipline and great effort, a path to recovery assisted by our actions.

[–] LoafyLemon@kbin.social 1 points 10 months ago

Fuck cancer. Best wishes to you, Mr Stallman. That is all.
