The NYC/MTA budget was calculated based on congestion revenue. The budget hole this creates is a huge problem. This was a capitulation that probably won't win Gov. Hochel any votes, but it certainly will throw NYC tax and budgets in disarray. Twenty-five years in the making, and she chickens out 3 weeks before. I'm just shaking my head.

It's pretty cowardly

Long term, NYC ain't going anywhere. Those businesses will be there. The city isn't going anywhere. Transitioning away from cars when we've invested billions into them sucks, but the transition from ICE to EVs (and fewer cars) is happening now and is the best possible time to do it, before we have to rebuild roads, bridges, and crash barriers for much heavier EVs. Taking as many cars off the road with trains, buses, and lots of protected bike lanes will save us a lot of money further down the road (heh), even if it sucks short term.

FTFY. The priorities were backwards.

Unfortunately it's basically impossible to have an EV in the city unless you own your home or can pay $700+/mon for a garage, and ~90% of residences here are owned by corporations

Noone likes Hochul or Adams. Ten years ago they'd be Republicans, but the overton window just keeps sliding. Adams especially, he's a real piece of shit who needs to disappear into NJ.

For those who don't live here, you don't need a car to get most places- ESPECIALLY in Manhattan which is entirely covered by subways (the outer boroughs are an afterthought). The only people driving into Manhattan are local businesses (who get an exception iirc) and the rich who refuse to take public transit.

[–] SuperCub@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

This seems like a step on the path towards better public transportation because that's what the toll money is supposed to get used for. However, tolls are a bit regressive since it's going to be the poorer people who opt not to pay, leaving richer people the ability to drive.

[–] jeffw@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

Tolls are regressive, yes, but it’s Manhattan. You don’t need a car. Also, people need to stop driving for the sake of our planet. Sometimes sin taxes work

[–] zettajon@lemdro.id 5 points 2 months ago

Ackshually, the majority of people driving into Manhattan are not poor. The toll would have had minimal effect on "poor people."

Pointed this out to the mods recently and I could have used that link in my message.

The Guardian does report some things well, but many, many are written to incite. Mediabiasfactcheck.com could scoot that rating a tad further left in my opinion.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

If anything it should move more towards the center.
