They should really switch to Mastodon and host their own instance, just like the German public broadcast service: ard.social

Btw I just realized that the BBC and NPR are also experimenting with Mastodon, the BBC even has their own instance: https://social.bbc/about

Looks like it's being used, that's cool. https://social.bbc/public

looks like npr abandoned that account in 2020

[–] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

Damn, didn't realize that. That's pretty unfortunate.

Didnt even know abou that...
That's way too progressive.
Especially compared to their YT-channel

They are not even listing it on their website. Neither for ard.de nor tagesschau.de

I never use the YouTube channels to watch their content, I prefer to watch that stuff right from the ARD/ZDF media library using an open-source application called MediathekView (GitHub). There's also a web version.

So are they going to Mastadon or what?

So ideally these public broadcasters would make communities on the official Swiss instance.

[–] Icalasari@fedia.io 10 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I think it would be better if they made their own instance that worked akin to Mastodon. Then they are always in control of it and people can use whatever Fediverse account to follow

[–] onion@feddit.de 28 points 2 months ago (1 children)

So a normal Mastodon instance

[–] Legend@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah like what is going on here .

[–] takeda@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

That's how I understand Mastodon's meant to work. You have your instance like you do a mail server, then you have full control over it.

[–] TWeaK@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I agree, that's what the BBC did.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Hmmm, did they? I'm looking and I can't tell what their legit account is. There's some account @c.im that has 25k followers but it doesn't seem like the actual BBC account, just some 3rd-party not (like a dozen others).

Which is the one they set up?

[–] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

I'm pretty sure they did, although I've used Mastadon even less than I used Twitter, so I can't be 100% sure. However I've read articles over the months saying they were introducing an instance as a trial, and then that they were keeping it running after the trial.

I deleted my account yesterday, and don't have any regrets anymore. There's nothing to be gained there. I don't want to be somewhere, where neonazis are encouraged to post

Haven't used it in quite a while either way. Only kept it so i can open links

[–] don@lemm.ee 9 points 2 months ago

I’m a bit surprised the Swiss were on Twitter to begin with.

Eh, it all takes a bit longer here.

This idea is cheesy and full of holes
