Hello all, so something recently changed with the Google photos app on my pixel 6 and it's automatically uploaded all my photos filled the space out and is now complaining angrily that I've used all the space.

I don't want to use Google backup, I have a OneDrive account and it backs up all my photos. The Google backup is redundant but now it's deprecated my photos app by filling it with pointless warning messages.

The first thing anyone should do when buying a smartphone is disabling/uninstalling the trash on it, including (especially) Google stuff.

There are tons of better Gallery applications out there.

I actually found the Photos app quite comprehensive. It stores all pictures, groups faces, and allows for searching on keywords (such as 'plane'). Is there another free app that does this?

You have to self-host it but Immich is basically a 1-1 clone of Google Photos, including AI facial and object detection. It's incredible.

Awesome! I will try it this weekend

Thanks everyone, managed to get the backup switched off. So I'm now totally turned off the photos app so what other gallery apps do people recommend?

There's a wonderful app just called Gallery on F Droid with beautiful design.

Immich is my preferred one. You have to self-host but it's stupid easy with something like CasaOS.

Otherwise Fossify Gallery is fine.

Use another gallery app. I forgot to turn it off on my S21 and just disabled it and ignored the random emails and notifications it will send.

Yes, it can be turned off.

It's very unintuitive but the easiest way to manage Google Cloud storage is with Google One.
