Is vegan cheese an actual thing?

[–] Stamets@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Yeah, it's just plant based. Some of them are awful, other ones are shockingly good. Texture is usually pretty much the same. Basically like lactose free cheese now a days. 5 years ago it was plastic but now you can't tell the difference.

Yeah. Some vegan cheese is ok on a burger. But the uncanny homogenous texture freaks me out on a sandwich. It's a weird transition. Also. Gouda is addictive. Nothing can beat gouda.

Example pizza with vegan cheese:

(Source: My dinner on Friday.)

This one is 50% Daiya smoked Gouda block and 50% store brand veg Mozzarella.

It's not Gouda, if it's not from the town of Gouda. It's just sparkling fake cheese.

[–] Enkers@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

XD

Not entirely false. I'd honestly like to see a few more vegan Goudas seasoned properly with caraway seeds! (Not that most non-vegan cheeses get this right either...)

Flavour wise, vegan cheese is pretty good, but there's definitely still room for improvement.

Ofc, a more "authentic" tasting vegan Gouda cheese probably wouldn't even belong on pizza in the first place!

I made the mistake of ordering a pizza with vegan cheese a few years ago. It smelled and tasted rancid, in an overbearingly chemical way. I didn’t finish it.

In terms of ethical veganism, what happened to the genetically engineered yeasts that produced cow casein, and looked like a promising way of making animal-free dairy products?

Not all vegan cheese are equal, some are absolute garbage but many are delicious. Miyokos specifically is an amazing vegan mozzarella that I use for pizza all the time.

Thankfully! My son has a dairy allergy but loves vegan cheese.

This is my favorite sliced one. Some others are very oily when melted. Others are sweet. Others need to be cast into a deep pit, never to see the light of day again.
