I don’t mean that the joke just isn’t funny, I want to know a joke that almost makes you want to fast-forward through the scene.

Pretty much every segment of Jerry's stand up routine in Seinfeld. I have no idea how that man became a famous comedian.

Product placements in it are terrible too

"Drake's coffee cakes ..."

The show has brought a lot of cringey memories to my life 🤢

Because that shit was actually funny 35 to 40 years ago. It just didn’t age well.

Tastes change.

[-] Blum0108@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

His stand-up was bad back then too

[-] Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee 8 points 1 week ago

40 years ago in the UK it was shown at 8am as a filler program when nobody was watching, because it was so painfully contrived

[-] LittleBorat2@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

No I watched it back then as a kid and though maybe you need to be 35 to like this.

Recently age 35 not my thing still.

I don't find Jerry funny, like at all. I like Costanza but I adore Kramer

[-] Fizz@lemmy.nz 25 points 1 week ago

Yeah Jerry was such a whiney twat.

Jerry was a straight guy in the show, is funny because he is not funny. He's just a normal guy with a few good observations

He's there to anchor the show

[-] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Like Larry David is way funnier

[-] Evotech@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Idk if you've seen the last seasons of curb but like, it does not really age well either

[-] Evotech@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

Idk, he just comes off as mean and a boomer

All tv shows named after the main character are better without that character (spin-offs excluded obvs).

Seinfeld

Dawsons creek

Rosanne

Ellen

Exception that proves the rule

Columbo

[-] macrocephalic@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

I don't think Frasier would work without Frasier

Cheers spin-off. Doesn't count.

E.g. joey, young Sheldon, mork & mindy.

BTVS was a film first, so I'm claiming spin-off. But you are right, that show would be less without her.

[-] Hadriscus@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago

Good lord the trailer is amazing.

https://m.imdb.com/video/vi21805593/?playlistId=tt0103893&ref_=tt_pr_ov_vi

by which I mean, it's deliciously, ridiculously early 90s

Watching it now it almost seems like a parody.

[-] Hadriscus@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago

well thanks for the discovery anyway, It looks worth a watch to me

If you are a fan of the show, yes.

[-] Hadriscus@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago

I have teenage memories of it. Not sure it was really any good...

[-] Hadriscus@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago

No way !! a film ?? Is it any good ?

[-] sanguinepar@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Homage maybe, but not a spinoff :-)

[-] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Yeah. I'm stretching my rule as much as possible. I'm basically trying to exclude all characters that have already been audience tested. Parody is sort of included in that.

[-] sanguinepar@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Ha ha, fair enough, I admire your determination to make this rule stick!

Another counterpoint though - Quincy ME. Oh course you could argue that it's not all that good even with Jack Klugman's crime solving coroner.

Oh, another one - Father Ted!

Yeah. I may have to exclude medical/investigative.

House, Sherlock, Columbo, Reacher, Lucifer

[-] sanguinepar@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Veronica Mars, Ironside, Chuck...

Arguably Fawlty Towers too?

Nah. Fatty Owls is named after the hotel.

Chuck is all about Charles Carmichael. (Streeeeeeeetch).

[-] sanguinepar@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Ha ha, fair enough. I see I've met someone as stubborn as I am ;-)

[-] Cornelius_Wangenheim@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Was it supposed to be funny? I thought the joke was that he was a terrible hackneyed comedian.
