A good documentary, on the USSR though not modern Russia, is The Human Face of Russia. You can find it on YouTube. It's Australian as well so it's interesting seeing a look into the Soviet Union from the point of view of a country that is aligned with the US but without so much Red Scare propaganda.

An obvious choice for me is The Hobbit. It hits a completely different and more adventurous feeling to LoTR, while still hinting at the lore that would follow. Sometimes I think I might prefer to LoTR in general tbh.

I haven't seen Saga, but I feel the chronological cut would lead to a loss of punch in the scenes with young Vito. Part of it is knowing where he ends up and what happens, and comparing that to his beginnings.

I disagree that being born in a certain country gives you a duty to fight and die for it, especially as a lot of lower income people fall through the cracks when it comes to receiving help. Sometimes protecting your friends and family involves getting out of where you are. An untrained person given a gun against their will is often quickly just another number in the casualty list

I did my time in my country's military voluntary, something I now regret. I fundamentally disagree with the brutal overseas wars we were involved in, but at the time the conditioning was fairly strong. It took me a few years after being out to realise how bad it was. Luckily for me and my conscience I was never sent overseas through a quirk of how my training played out. I don't like the idea of people being forced into that environment.

Shooting out of a cannon with the wings hat and flying around in Mario 64 was such a pure fun experience for my kid brain. The switch in music and just soaring around a 3d level was really something special at the time.

The web browser works fine for me, and then I don't have a other app on my phone. I've tried a bunch of different apps, Jerboa, Liftoff, Wefwef/voyager, and connect, and I keep coming back to just viewing it in browser. Haven't tried Sync because the idea of wilfully putting ads into a thing that doesn't have them is disgusting to me.

I've sworn off most things GW for being an evil scummy company, but some of the books are absolute bangers. Gaunts Ghosts, Ravenor, Eisenhorn, and the Night Lords books are up there.

My favourite Horus Heresy books are probably the ones to do with the Dark Angels. They have a medievalist/futurist feel which I really love. If you love these particular ones too I suggest checking out an unrelated book called A Canticle for Liebowitz, one of my favourite of all time.

Also, ditch those Chaos Gods. They are only using you. The God-Emperor is the only way.

I picked the SDF instance for this reason, otherwise I would be on aussie.zone or lemmygrad as my main. I also have one on lemmy.ml but I prefer to distribute the server load.

Yeah that one is fairly active. The issue with browsing all is the amount of posts that come out of lemmyshitposting and memes that flood the feed.

I can't recommend lemmyverse.net enough to find cool instances and communities. Once you find a community you like on it just copy the URL and paste it into a search from your instance.

True you can, it's a very small issue. The problem is they were always at or near the top. One chain isn't that bad, but seeing it over and over again on interesting posts gets old fast.

I hope to see less song lyric comment chains on completely unrelated posts. Also I don't know why, but I always hated the whole, 'my partner, let's call them blank (not real name)' thing.
