Microsoft basically owns them. If anything they would be absorbed into Microsoft. The openAI brand is probably too valuable at this point to shelf it, they'll keep it as is. Just my guess.

Will this affect SteamOS in any way? I guess the development on that is separate from KDE but I don't really know.

In general, it's a tiny nerdy minority that doesn't trust meta or even cares at all about internet privacy. Unfortunately that's the only tiny minority who could have any interest in the meta verse.

This is one of the downsides of the widespread adoption of HDMI, it has quite a few downsides. Something like display port would be better, but it's far less common. Such is life.
