AirVPN has a pretty good reputation AKAIK, and their 2-year plans are cheaper than Mullvad and Proton.

Every movement begins with and is made up of individuals working toward making things better, which is how anything in history has ever gotten better. One more individual joining their local mutual aid group, protesting for the climate, and fighting for what's right is exactly what this world needs right now.

You may not have the ability to help someone across the world very effectively or at all, but if you fight for what's right locally, it can spread all across the globe.

The bot is designed to be resilient against those attacks, the creator goes into more detail here.

I put together a large list of categorized Linux compatible games, many of which are multiplayer, all if them are free, and each entry lists their open-source status. Hopefully y'all can find some good ones there for this group :)

Personally, I suggest OpenSpades

There's nothing from a user experience currently that makes bluesky bad, it's just that since it doesn't seem to actually support decentralization, there's nothing to stop it from eventually getting just as bad as twitter over time due to profit incentive. Misskey/mastodin are the only microblogging platforms that are truly immune from corporate manipulation and enshittification, which would mean it's a long term solution (that while imperfect, can only get better).

Huh, you're right, he has been absent. He still seems to be updating notrack over on his gitlab, so I have to assume he just got bored with videos, or some other aspect of his life took priority. I don't have a twitter account, so I can't see if he's posted there, but hopefully he's in good spirits and health.

The automated bot was created by the mod of pleasant politics in an effort to create a place to talk about politics that didn't have trolls and nasty people. It scans users across the lemmyverse and determines to ban or unban based on how inflammatory you are, which is determined by your downvote/upvotes ratio over time.

XMPP has quite good encryption nowadays, and at least according to our sysadmin, it's quite a bit lighter on system requirements. I think there was also some concerns about the matrix foundation being pretty corporate oriented.

My instance uses a self hosted XMPP for mods/Admins to communicate quickly, which works quite well.

AFAIK the Nostr protocsal sorta let's you hop around, but it's full to the brimwith cryptobros, and I'm still not sure how moderation works there.

Assuming they search Lemmy, and one of top results is the join-lemmy page (second result for me, below Lemmy.world), the server recommendation tool can suggest small instances with only a couple hundred members. For instance, if one selects Art as the topic and English as the language.

Unless an instance enrolls in Lemmy-federate, the default behavior is that a user, even on the /all view, will only see local communities, and outside communities that another local user has sought out and subscribed to.

If a newbie joins a small instance and doesn't know how to seek out communities that interest them with lemmyverse.net, they would likely have a very small range of content in their feed.

Lemmy-federate helps by auto subscribing an instance to participating communities, seeding a wide range of content immediately.

A large instance would offer a good experience either way, but would encourage centralization without Lemmy-federate existing.

Now we just need more signatures.

As per the title, I'm curious of your thoughts on this concept. Methane from landfills are already used as a source of energy in many cases, but according to the EPA, a tremendous amount are not, and contribute 14% to the US's methane gas emissions.

I'm not terribly happy how the inventors of this tech are trying to keep it a trade secret, and their estimate that an installation will cost between 1 to 10 million takes it out of reach a backyard solarpunk from taking advantage of it (though it sounds like it could be DIY'd with enough know-how).

On the face of it, if it makes more landfills become viable as a source of energy to reduce use of fossil fuels, it seems like it could be a useful tool against climate change. The best case scenario would be that a local energy co-op is able to afford the initial startup cost to get it operational, ideally using repurposed engines from used cars.

What do y'all make of it?

Hi everyone! I recently migrated the Documentaries community from Lemmy.world to our new home at Lemmy.cafe. There's a longer post as to why here for another community I brought over, but one of the big benefits was the ability for the Beehaw community to join in and participate, as they are defederated from lemmy.world.

The Documentaries community is... Nah yeah it's just documentaries, innit mate? But it's good ones! So if you like a good little doc here and there, in between yer netflix and yer podcasts, well by gosh this might be the community for you!

We've got all kinds; war docs, environmental docs, history docs, science docs, even got some weirder docs that'll make ya scratch your head as your mind absorbs what ya just took in, like a drug, but informational.

If that sounds like something that'd interest you, then be sure to check it out and maybe even subscribe over at:

If you're familiar with the old MealtimeVideos from reddit, it's quite similar to that. But for those unfamiliar, the main draw of the community is that it collects high-quality vidoes, oftentimes edutainment, and provides the duration of the video in the title, so you can select one that will slot in with your breakfast, lunch, or any other meal!

Of course, you don't have to be eating to enjoy the videos, but meal watchers are the main demographic, I suspect.
