Thanks for the info!

I may add options to modify the exported data in some ways via a simple checkbox in the future, but I wouldn’t count on it.

The 2nd screenshot https://github.com/StableNarwhal/Lemmy-Userdata-Migration/wiki/How-to-only-export-or-transfer-a-part-of-my-user-data,-e.g.-blocked-instances%3F shows that feature already exists?

What about forking lasim, which is now inactive? https://github.com/CMahaff/lasim

It's better than the built-in option because it gives you more options. For example, if I only want to add blocks from one account to another without overwriting any other settings. I don't see that your tool allows for that.

you just write in Markdown (the same thing Lemmy uses), pick a theme, and you’re good to go

That is far too basic for most websites. It's absurd to suggest that's a valid alternative for something like Wordpress + Elementor.

Squarespace should be on the table for static websites as well.

How so? It's not static that I'm aware of, unless you're exporting it to a file after using the UI to create it?

I assumed we were talking about direct replacements for WordPress, not hosted alternatives.

Well, as you said, Wordpress does a lot of things. Shopify, Wordpress, Squarespace, etc., are certainly interchangeable/competitors to a large degree. Wordpress has hosted options and is a default/main option for many hosting companies.

You can build a full website with every major function and design option with Wordpress. You can't with Jekyll and Hugo unless you can code.

static site? - Hugo, Jekyll, etc - just generates regular HTML

These are either vastly more limited, or they require you to be able to code.

ecommerce? - consider nopCommerce or OpenCard

I've never heard of these, but I have seen people say that if you want to do ecommerce you should only use Shopify, because even small differences can result in people not purchasing your products.

What do you use instead?

[-] Anon518@sh.itjust.works 17 points 5 months ago

This works quite well usually.

I definitely don't agree. I think this is very problematic. I rely on all to find new communities. I don't think one newcommunities sub is a valid replacement. It would suffer from the same issue -- people would have to spam their post to every single instances's newcommunities sub, which is ridiculous and not even viable.

I did a search from shitjustworks for "reddit die" and did not find https://lemmy.world/c/watchredditdie so I made https://sh.itjust.works/c/watchredditdie (unnecessarily). This should really not happen. When someone makes a community there should be a "ping" sent out to notify all other federated instances.

And from what I know, if I post to !sh.itjust.works/c/watchredditdie only users on sh.itjust.works will see the posts until other people from other instances randomly come across it somehow and subscribe? This really needs to be improved.

There are voices, and actions that reddit has silenced that should be given back a voice again. Reddit has been doing very bad things and sweeping them under the rug. This will give people a chance to find out about what reddit is trying to hide from the public.

/r/watchredditdie for example, was a big sub that reddit basically shut down. I'm hoping to draw some of those people to lemmy as their new home. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/24701475.2021.1997179

I saw some weird pro-reddit content on other reddit-themed communities and then !snoocalypse@lemmy.ml went into archive mode, so I decided to make this to keep it clean from any reddit shills lurking in the dark. I'll start by posting some historical content.

By the way, anyone know what might be the most anti-reddit lemmy instance? I'd hate to find out that shitjustworks likes reddit and doesn't want a "watch reddit die" community on their instance.

Moving to the fediverse

Hi guys, are you familiar with the fediverse? It's an open-source reddit-alternative that is owned and run by no one. So it doesn't suffer from the threat of a single hostile entity making drastic, unwanted changes, as we recently saw with reddit, resulting in the side-wide protests.

It would be great to have your subreddit join the fediverse! If you do, I would suggest not using lemmy.world, as it's already the largest instance and it's better to spread things out so no one has too much control.

Info:

You can even create your own instance like /r/futurology and /r/piracy did https://futurology.today, https://lemmy.dbzer0.com. If you do, you may want to seed your community with content https://futurology.today/post/166237.

Once you make a community on Lemmy you could sticky a post in your sub to let your community know, and/or create an automod sticky in each thread.

And now apparently removing all comments that mention Lemmy...

[-] Anon518@sh.itjust.works 13 points 5 months ago

Need to encourage more communities to move to Lemmy.

I've also been pretty creeped out by how many pro-reddit people there are on lemmy. It's really weird.

The sound is much less important than the smell.

So everyone's able to hold it in? Where do they fart?

I was homeschooled previously with a small group of other children and we fart in class all the time.

Now I'm in public school for high school and no one is farting. I was very sheltered and public school is like a whole new world for me, so I don't know what the norms are. I've been holding it in but my stomach hurts and it leaks out anyway.

I don't understand how there are so many more people in high school and yet zero farts...
