Disclaimer: I changed a little the layout and thanks for the contributions!

The Idea:

On my old Mastodon Profile i've made a list of Rebuilds/Fan Remakes/SourcePorts (when possible opensource, no commercial remakes) for old PC Games, and i want to share it here on Lemmy too, so people can easily find it.

Why?

I've played lot of these games, and i'm glad there a Fans who still working on these games, to make it accessible on modern systems and giving them some QoL improvments. In my opinion, that's a great way to preserve old games from being forgotten and keep playable for new players. Also these people need some recognition (at least) for their hard work.

I'm glad If you help to complete this list and contribute some games you know.

In the moment there are alphabetical sorted:

  • 68 PC Games in total
  • 53 Remakes, SourcePorts etc.

New additions will be marked with *

The List:

There is also the List here https://osgameclones.com/, who did unknown to me the same.

Addendum SCUMMVM:

SCUMMVM is the first place for adventure games from Lucas Arts (Monkey Island etc.) or Sierra (Kings Quest etc) anf for the RPGs from Origin (Ultima VI), Westwood (Eye of the Beholder) and New World Compting (Might and Magic I, III and IV), but also many more. Here you can check the list of games out.

Addendum "Inspired Games"

I think that games divergence too much from the original games, but also should be mentioned.

Addendum Console Games:

If you are looking for Ports for Console Games to PC here is this list on GitHub

Also i would recommend the Open Source Port of the First two Jake and Daxter games

Addendum Source Ports for Android

moonpiedumplings made a list of Source Ports for Android on reddit

Thrive was inspired by Spore, and many others.

You seem like you might like osgameclones.com. It's absolutely massive because it includes projects even if they're unfinished or abandoned, but you can sort by playability, development status, even programming language if you're looking to contribute.

[–] OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

Thanks for the Tip. I try to look for games that are playable and almost complete and are it to the list

[–] Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Beside the already mentioned Open Source Game Clones there's also this list on GitHub.

As for specific titles, I'd like to add:

There's also WipeOut Phantom Edition but this one isn't open-source so I'll just leave it here in case someone wants to check out the existing build.

[–] OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Thanks for the list, but i try to keep it in the PC Side of gaming, mostly i'm more familiar with that. I'll think about If and how i add these to the list :) Thanks again:)

Yeah, I've seen it after writing this. Thankfully, half of these are for PC native games so I didn't miss completely at least.

[–] OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

I added them anyway to Addendum ;)

Star Wars Jedi Knight I and II: Jedi Academy and Jedi Outcast (Not stable) - OpenJK https://github.com/JACoders/OpenJK

Despite the official name being "Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy" it is not Jedi Knight I. It is actually a sequel to Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. It came out only a year after JO and was announced in April. At first I thought it was an April Fool's joke because the screenshots looked like something that could easily be made with the mod tools at the time.

It wasn't called Jedi Knight III because you play a different character.

Anyways, the real Jedi Knight I was "Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II". An open source implementation is available at https://github.com/shinyquagsire23/OpenJKDF2

And to round it off, the open source implementation of Dark Forces is available at https://theforceengine.github.io/. I think it even supports the remaster.

[–] OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org 4 points 2 weeks ago

I See where i went wrong. Thanks for pointing that out and thanks for the Links to Dark Forces.

I 'll add that to the list and change the names

Thanks again

I actually really appreciate someone clarifying the chronology of these games, I've got them all in my steam library and can never remember the order they go in.

Do the OS remakes have any QoL improvements? I tried playing through them recently and had a very hard time with the manual save system since I'm used to autosave points in linear games like that.

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

As far as I know they don't add autosaves. I think the priority was things like proper wide-screen support and higher resolutions for the older games.

[–] Excrubulent@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Honestly anything to deal with the horrendous friction and instability of the original would be welcome. Even modded I think I had to stick with 4:3 which even with black bars was still not quite right on my modern system. It would have to be a better experience, even if I have to re-learn manual quicksaves.

[–] Excrubulent@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Got them working, and was pleasantly surprised to find most of them had flatpak installers! Manual saving is still a pain but the engines running smoothly does make a big difference.

Although the dark forces installer doesn't work with the steam install so you have to copy the game data to the data folder to make it work.

It’s a shame that Another Metroid 2 Remake got Cease & Desisted, purely because Nintendo was about to release Samus Returns and didn’t want to compete with a fan game that was better.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's not finished yet but OpenXray Gunslinger is probably going to be a better STALKER: Call of Pripyat remaster than the official one that just got announced.

  • Super Mario Bros. X is a Mario fan-game remake that uses lots of assets from the SNES era of Mario games (Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario RPG).
  • Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a Sonic fan game made from the Doom engine, inspired by the Sega Genesis era of Sonic games.

They're both open-source.

I've edited the post, so it looks more appealing. Sorry, that it was so hard to read at first, i hope now it's better

[–] testman@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 weeks ago

https://osgameclones.com/ is the best aggregate for this kind of thing.
https://libregamewiki.org/ also looks like something relevant.

Maybe now that we have a messy thread of various links, we can go check whether some of them are not yet listed in osgameclones.

[–] NotKyloRen@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't forget the Xash3D engine for GoldSrc games (e.g. Half-Life and mods). It runs on everything from a PSP to a PC. And it's faithful. It relies on the original assets.

[–] OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

Thanks. I put it on the List :)

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh, also ScummVM should always be included in such a list. It supports a ton of classic adventure games from LucasArts, Sierra and others. And by now even Might and Magic 4+5: World of Xeen.

[–] OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

Added at First. I forgot the obvious one, sorry :)

OpenRA https://www.openra.net/ to play Red Alert, Command and Conquer and Dune 2000

[–] Esjott@feddit.org 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Widelands - Settlers II inspired game, played a couple of hours, pretty neat.

FreeCIV - how can that gme be missing here? :)

UnCIV - Civ V clone, also pretty neat

[–] Lumiluz@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I wouldn't say Unciv is a Civ5 clone with those graphics though...

[–] Esjott@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

So remake as the website says? 🤔

[–] Lumiluz@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'd just say it's an inspiration and say it's a standard era 4x game. Graphically it's a demake, but the cpu opponents are superior to those from V I'd say

Throw Manic Miners on there. It's a fan remake of the old Lego Rock Raiders game, and it's really fun. There's a custom level builder and I think there's a browser you can search for other custom levels.

[–] OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

Thanks for the Tip! I added it to the list!

[–] ageek@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

How come there's no mention of 0.A.D, it has amazing graphics, at least from the videos and screenshots. Haven't gotten a chance to play it unfortunately.

[–] OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

Hi, i've put it in the "Addendum “Inspired Games”"

[–] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

XCOM 1 (UFO Defense) and XCOM 2: Terror From The Deep - OpenXCOM https://openxcom.org/

Master of Orion 1 - 1oom https://github.com/1oom-fork/1oom

Ultima 6 - Nuvie https://github.com/nuvie/nuvie (apparently now part of ScummVM)

[–] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

A few more honorable mentions that are not exact re-implementations with compatibility with the original datafiles, but more spiritual followups:

Total Annihilation - TA Spring > Spring Engine > Recoil Engine > Beyond All Reason https://github.com/beyond-all-reason (I think there are mods that make it "Basically TA")

Escape Velocity/EV Nova - Endless Sky https://endless-sky.github.io/

Goldeneye 64 (multiplayer only) - Goldeneye Source https://forums.geshl2.com/index.php?topic=7823.0

But how dare you not include OpenMW! Imagine having an og Xbox masterpiece on your phone, and you can mod it!
