Canada is the only G7 country without a foreign intelligence agency.

That you know of....

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 27 points 2 days ago

Seems like Canada just has the best spies.

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

LOL! RIGHT????

I would assume that we have our own network. We just don't gloat about it.

That feels kind of like a half-truth/obsfucation from lapresse.

While we may indeed lack a dedicated foreign intelligence service (I don't know...maybe they're just really really good at their job.) I do know that CSIS rolls a lot of those duties into their own purview. Whether that reaches the level of secret agent spy shit, who knows. But it's not like they're not out there figuring out threats to Canada.

Best way to stay hidden is convince people that you never existed in the first place.

I thought so too, but from what I understand CSIS doesn't do boots on the ground type work (overseas), and mainly just gathers data. (Wildbus's comment below claims they do still harass canadians here at home though)

Sounds more the case that while we do HAVE an intelligence service, they are underfunded and restricted in their abilities do do as much as they may need to.

That is absolutely not true. You can ask any numbers of left wing and indigenous organizers and their families and friends, who've received CSIS visits at their homes.

Interesting. I meant "boots on the ground" overseas in the context of foreign intelligence as per the article.

Doesn't surprise me that of course they have to stick their noses into other peoples business at the bequest of the conservatives.

I will spy on America for you in exchange for Canadian citizenship.

[–] ninthant@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Respectfully, I don’t believe that’s something you want to say or joke about in a public forum.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

American cops don’t know what Lemmy is yet.

[–] k_rol@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago

true but he's also probably fine as with the current US context, I'm sure a lot of people say things that would put them on a list, much more than before.

[–] Punchshark@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago

Fuck murica!

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 4 points 2 days ago

Fuck America, but also learn from their mistakes. There's no reason to believe that in this era of jingoism national security won't be used to commit all sorts of horrible acts both at home and abroad.

Now I really want a Canadian 007 movie

[–] Montreal_Metro@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Oh we do. You just don’t know about them.

I wish CSIS had an office in Vancouver... Not everyone in Canada lives on the east coast...
