i have an old samsung a8 that i want to try rooting on but the volume buttons are broken so i can't do the whole volume down + power button thing. is there a way to do it from PC or something?
i'm on linux mint if that changes anything

You can install adb and use adb reboot recovery

well i couldn't do it with my samsung phone cos it won't turn on or charge, so i tried it with an lg k8 (2017) and wouldn't you know it lg only allows (allowed? is lg still around?) some for some of their phones to be unlocked. i hate device manufacturers

I used to install lineage OS on a phone with broken screen. With adb reboot recovery you can boot to twrp and attach a mouse to the phone usb port to navigate.

I don't think so. You need power buttons to select aply from adb and sideload lineage os. Try to boot into fastboot using adb and use a keyboard for up and down. If it works then you can install LOS if it doesn't then you can't
