Always good

Sorted them into a few categories

Social

  • Cheogram - xmpp chat, can also handle phone and sms gateways

  • Fedilab - my preferred fediverse app for mastodon

  • Jerboa - preferred lemmy app

  • K-9 Mail - email

  • Pixelix - pixelfed app. not sure if I like this or PixelDroid better yet

Media

  • AntennaPod - podcasts

  • Kiwix - offline copies of useful wikis, q&as, archives, etc.

  • Librera FD - books

  • NewPipe - watch youtube videos, although google keeps trying to break it

  • Voice - audiobooks

Security

  • Aegis - two factor authentication

  • KeePassDX - password management

  • WG Tunnel - VPN connection, still not sure if this is the best option

Notes and Documents

  • Orgzly Revised - note taking. for people not familiar with emacs something like logseq or safe notes might be better

  • Pinkt - bookmarks

  • Syncthing-Fork - synchronize files between devices

System

  • F-Droid - technically it can install itself

  • Lawnchair - alternative home screen / app launcher

  • ntfy - runs in the background, handles push notifications for some other apps

  • Unexpected Keyboard - has the fancy keys that most android keyboards leave out

Other Tools

  • Fennec - basically firefox

  • Organic Maps - sometimes missing info and it doesn't have traffic data. simpler than OsmAnd

  • PocketPaint - make art on your phone

  • QuickDict - offline multi-language dictionary

I've got hundreds more installed, but those are some of my favorites.

Sherpa TTS is a great companion to Librera to turn any eBook into an audiobook.

It was actually the app that made me try it out. Glad I did.

fossify gallery is pretty nice

[–] TanteTarantel@feddit.org 6 points 1 month ago

I'd like to add Broccoli as a database for cooking recipes. It is very convenient, as it extracts the relevant data out of most SEO-inflated webpages.

[–] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Others here have already mentioned most of the ones I use.

Some that are less common are

  • The Fossify suite of apps
  • Eternity for Lemmy browsing
  • Spotube for music streaming
  • OsmAnd for navigation
  • Converter NOW for conversions

The most useful one though is probably Syncthing. It lets you synchronise folders between your devices.

[–] stardust@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

Pipepipe - newpipe fork with sponsorblock and Google account fallback for restricted videos

Quillpad - Google Keep replacement

KeepassDX - password manager and nice keyboard that autotypes what you want without copy pasting

Syncthing-fork - for syncing files

IronFox

There is no result for "IronFox" on f-droid.org: https://search.f-droid.org/?q=IronFox

[–] Grangle1@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

It has a repo you can add to F-Droid. I forgot I added the separate repo.

[–] sic_semper_tyrannis@lemmy.today -1 points 1 month ago (3 children)

It's on F-Droid if you load their repo. Also it's open source but I understand some people don't like their license.

[–] cypherpunks@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

It’s on F-Droid if you load their repo.

It is not allowed in F-Droid's official repos because it is not open source; anyone can run their own F-Droid repo and distribute proprietary software from it.

Also it’s open source but I understand some people don’t like their license.

It is not open source; that is a term with an internationally recognized definition. Even FUTO themselves now acknowledge it is not.

[–] eruchitanda@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I think they mean it's technically not a 'FOSS' app, but instead a 'source-available' app.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

There license strips you of your freedoms. It is not free (libre) or open source. You can fork it but there are arbitrary restrictions that take away your rights.

[–] Saltarello@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

A few I've not seen mentioned yet:

  • Equate - calculator/converter etc
  • Feeder - RSS client
  • Immich - Photos. App for self hostable server
  • Jellyfin - media client
  • Joplin - notes
  • MJ PDF - PDF viewer with extras
  • PDF Converter - handy PDF tool
  • Squawker - view the cesspit, follow stuff etc
  • Subz - track your subscriptions
  • Untracker - removes tracking info before sharing links
  • Whobird - Shazam for birds
[–] Inf_V@kbin.earth 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

what RSS feeds do you have if you don't mind me asking? I've been looking for some

[–] Saltarello@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Nothing exciting I'm afraid - a few football related feeds (Guardian & Telegraph are solid for football stories, usually interesting articles rather than made up transfer horseshit) plus some general news headlines/generic/"top stories" type feeds & a couple of tech bits like Ars Technica.

Expand this from F-Droid to Obtainium 😉
