Damn, this is the first I've heard that there might be federal charges. What the actual fuck? Now a single murder on the street can be a federal case? I want off of Mr. Toad's wild ride.

E: Well, I guess they charge certain murders at the fed level but this seems like one citizen holding a grudge against another. Victim isn't involved with law enforcement so WTF?

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 118 points 2 days ago

Victim was rich. That's all the justification it takes.

He crossed state lines in the course of executing his plan. It was always going to become federal.

[–] FoxyFerengi@lemm.ee 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Kyle Rittenhouse didn't get federal charges. Guess it really matters who you shoot

[–] kata1yst@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

That piece of shit absolutely deserved federal charges and much more, but the prosecution was always on his side. They sank his case repeatedly.

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 28 points 2 days ago

Oh yeah. Continuing plan over state lines, like a kidnapping.

I stand corrected.

He's a threat to the state's monopoly on violence

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

My guess is they use the commerce clause to make it federal.

Perfect example of the power of language. It's striking what the article does not say -- no mention of (alleged) motive, no mention of health insurance industry practices and United in particular, no mention of Luigi's impact. Very cop- and prosecutor-friendly piece describing the mechanics of the charges, and treating these events the same way the media treats so much else: episodic, not narrative. This is not an isolated episode, this is tied to larger trends -- so where is the mention of those trends and how they impact Luigi's actions?? Even the parts about his handwritten notes don't really talk about this!!

Would you pardon someone who took one of your homies out? Biden and the UHC guy are two sides of the same shitty coin.

[–] ThePantser@lemmy.world 28 points 2 days ago (2 children)

No but the Dems need to win over the people if they want another shot in 28. This would go a long way, but they would lose their giant bags of money.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

nancy just blocked aoc. they don't want a win.

[–] Ferrous@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Do you think Biden would potentially pardon Luigi?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 days ago

Not in a month of Sundays, to use an expression that was brand new when Biden entered politics.

[–] Sidhean@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Well it's probably not going to happen, but it'd be really funny if he did

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

He’s on trial in state court.

[–] TheLowestStone@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Read the article. There are federal charges.

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Federal in addition to state charges.

[–] TheLowestStone@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Yes. Biden could only gardening for the federal charges.
