e.g. Can a software use a naming scheme based on Genshin characters, WoW locations/zones, etc. for their version codenames?

Debian versions are based on Toy Story characters.

And the Debian logo is:

Sure. There aren't any rules. VLCs version names are Discworld characters.

Man I sure hope so:

I use Federation starship classes as my codenames. Granted, I'm a tiny project, but I've yet to get a C&D from Paramount or the Roddenberry estate. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Older Android versions were named after desserts.

Are you familiar with Debian and how its versions are named?

You did not mention where, and I’m not a lawyer, but I’ve never heard of a copywrite or trademark holder react to just the name on an open software release .

Can’t hurt to get permission

Edit: Cannot use, too many automated take down notices whenever release mentioned on certain media. Even with permission, it will be a pain

NCR names their motherboards after NASCAR tracks.
