hey sorry I missed your text, I am processing a non-stop 24/7 onslaught of information with a brain designed to eat berries in a cave

I like the Sir PTerry approach to that(to paraphrase):

We're trying to understand the universe with a brain and language designed to tell us what tree has the good fruit, and which one has the hungry jaguar.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

We've designed languages and terms to help us communicate in the modern world we've built around ourselves.

Our brains were never designed, but evolved to throw rocks into the trees to scare the cats or knock down the fruit.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

True enough regarding the brain, but language evolves a lot faster than brains do. It long ago grew past only being about survival.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 30 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If our brains had been designed, they'd have been designed for what we're doing.

[–] Hexagon@feddit.it 36 points 1 year ago (6 children)

Yeah, "designed" is not the best term here. Evolution doesn't design, it just throws random shit at the wall and sees what sticks

[–] threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, I think "adapted" would be a better term than "designed" in this context.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I'd argue that it's the perfect word.

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And for far far longer than we've been living in modern society, evolution designed (in its slapdash, trial-and-error way) us to be the berry-eating cave dwelling mammals we are.

The only difference is that it's an active design process instead of a pre-planned one.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's still not design, though. The term is called "evolution."

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

We were designed via the evolutionary process. It's both words in one! Everyone wins!

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Definitely a joke captain obvious.

[–] emptiestplace@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I find it incredibly confusing how such uninspired and borderline mansplainy tripe gets upvoted more than actual thoughtful comments. One thing though - it definitely wasn't a joke.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The whole post isn't a joke? Wow, you really need to get out more if you think the OP tweet is serious.

Maybe we were planted here on Earth by advanced beings. Beings that designed our whole evolution and existence in detail.
At least it's fun to think about lol

Edit: what's with the fucking downvotes? Im just kidding around. Dont become reddit.

If this garbage is what they designed, they should be fired.

Out of a cannon.

Into a star.

reminder that giraffes have a nerve that starts in their head, goes down their neck into the torso, and then back up into the head.

if earth life is designed they must have been extremely skilled and extremely spiteful to make shit like this function.
