Remember when Obama got Iran to give up refining nuclear material then Trump fucked it up horribly?

Pepperidge farm remembers.

[–] PanArab@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 months ago (2 children)

And Biden did not go back to the deal. Both Biden and Trump serve Israel

[–] homura1650@lemm.ee 12 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Biden tried to restart the deal back in 2021, and has been trying ever since.

However, it turns out that the US is not the only party involved in international treaties. We can't just pick up the ball and go home mid game, then come back in a year with a new coach and expect everyone to continue playing like nothing happened

The original deal was a difficult achievement on its own. Now, we need to not only repeat that, but also deal with the fact that Iran does not trust us to follow through with our end of the deal. Overcoming that needs good negotiation, and a lot of concessions we did not want to make.

This is why administrations of both parties have historically upheld deals made by the opposing party that they didn't like. Unilaterally breaking deals every 4 years because of who wins an election makes the US a non-credible partner in negotiations. You can't just wave a wand and fix that.

Biden did not have the option after Trump betrayed them. What are you talking about???

[–] NutWrench@lemmy.ml 49 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Look, it's the bi-annual "Iran is 6 months away from getting nukes" headline. I wonder which intelligence service came up with this (again).

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 12 points 3 months ago

Yup, I recall seeing news about Iran being mere days away from nuclear weapons for literally decades now.

[–] thesporkeffect@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Some analyst has a repeating calendar event labeled IRAN NUKE STORY

[–] MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 31 points 3 months ago

Thanks trump.

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 22 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Iran should be single mindedly pursuing this objective

[–] nohaybanda@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Should have started (and hope they did) as soon as Gaza popped off.

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

I think they started at the "axis of evil" speech

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 20 points 3 months ago (1 children)

man even americans are starting to regurgitate this isreali party line; gazans are so fucked.

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 14 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Is it an Israeli line? I don't doubt that Israel says it, but it seems to me like Iran developing nukes is a pretty rational response to America ditching the agreement. I certainly don't like a government like Iran's having those weapons, but it's very understandable for it to want them and the country has the capacity to make it happen

[–] PowerCrazy@lemmy.ml 17 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Yes it's an Israeli line. (This was from like 20 years ago.)

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 7 points 3 months ago

Got to love the iconography of a bomb from the 19th century.

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 5 points 3 months ago

Doesn't that turn of phrase imply that it's untrue (or at least misrepresentative) though? It's not meaningfully "an Israeli line" if it's actually just true

[–] PanArab@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I certainly don’t like a government like Iran’s having those weapons

  1. It is not about you
  2. Israel is worse and has nuclear weapons, the US already used them twice and Ted Cruz and other US politicians regularly threatens to nuke the Middle East
  3. Countries in the region have a right to protect themselves from foreign powers
[–] Skua@kbin.earth 4 points 3 months ago

1 - I didn't say it was? I'm allowed to express an opinion without expecting the world to conform to it

2 - Disliking Iran's government doesn't imply liking opposed governments

3 - They do, I agree

Broken clocks can still be right.

https://apnews.com/article/iran-nuclear-uranium-enrichment-germany-israel-c9b3669a7721bd8929d465117c81b70f

Inspectors from the UN found enrichment activity was starting to exceed 84% where 90% is the target for bomb making. 60% is the level they are attempting to enforce.

Also this is February 2023, so you’d suspect they’ve made more progress since then.

[–] PanArab@lemmy.ml 18 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

The Middle East is developing deterrence against foreign threats right before us and the US can’t stop it

If Blinken doesn’t like it, he can always start with his bosses at Tel Aviv and their nuclear weapons

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago

This brings me back to the Bush years.

Also makes me thing of the movie ‘Wag the Dog.’

[–] doubtingtammy@lemmy.ml 11 points 3 months ago

Oh great. Starting a war is a classic move for embattled presidents

[–] Fidel_Cashflow@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

good, Iran needs nukes. especially when a significant portion of the US government holds the opinion "we should nuke Iran".

[–] Mrkawfee@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

I mean if you were the Iranian leader and a) saw what the US did to Iraq and Libya and b) saw the total impunity that Israel has in the West to conduct mass killings on civilians, wouldn't you want a nuclear deterrent?

All this talk about iran sounds like another beating the drums for an iraq war.

[–] mlg@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Even drunk Pakistani ISI knows this isn't true.

[–] ralphio@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Same as it ever was (ever meaning the past 2 years atleast).

https://isis-online.org/isis-reports/detail/iranian-breakout-timeline-now-at-zero/

It would still take months to build a detonator though.
