The businesses are launching a joint venture to develop platforms for “software-defined vehicles.”

So I just need to run an Ansible playbook and my sedan turns into a pickup truck?

Isn't this more or less what Tesla did?

I don't know if they were the first, but they're one of the most notorious offenders.

VW has been doing it for years anyway.

Multiple features of their infotainment are there but softlocked out, the engines on the more powerful trim levels aren't different or tuned, it's just a different ecu map, etc.

I have observed that myself with the infotainment system of my 2017 Golf Alltrack, but when did they start software derating their engines? My understanding is that there's nothing much to be gained from an aftermarket ECU tune unless I switch to premium gas and the more powerful Golf models have other real differences like bigger turbochargers.

They just disbanded that project.

Holy shit you weren't joking!

Given Apple's track record for allowing people to repair their devices this would have been a nightmare product

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

To be fair, repairing any modern car is kind of a nightmare.
