At this point, DDG is basically Bing, which heavily regulates piracy. Most often searching for a list of scrapers won't even result in a search return. I know 1337 is pretty blacklisted.

You should be using something like yandex.com for your search queries as they are one of the last ones I've seen that still return pretty unfiltered results.

DDG/Bing, Google, Ecosia (Bing), Yahoo, all of the US based search engines have long filtered torrents or websites known for piracy. Places like steamunlocked or steamrips have also been removed.

I wouldn't go to Yandex directly, just enable it in SearXNG

It also has an option to search 1337x, The Pirate Bay, SolidTorrents and other sites directly

That is honestly a really cool feature. I'd consider myself tech-savy-ish but I always forget what the official Revanced site is. I always have to go to the GitHub. There's so many fake Revanced sites, it's crazy!

[-] heckypecky@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 5 days ago

Nice feature. Is it reliable? I can imagine this being dangerous if someone finds out how to manipulate it to flag a malicious site as official.

[-] ShadowCat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 5 days ago

it's not automated, it's manual afaik

[-] lord_ryvan@ttrpg.network 10 points 6 days ago

They've been doing this for months, at least with some piracy-related sites.

[-] YourPrivatHater@ani.social 129 points 1 week ago

Thats great even outside of piracy, there is a gigantic influx of fake websites with very similar URLs

[-] degen@midwest.social 46 points 1 week ago

Wonder how long that will stand. Also hasn't 1337 been deemed unsafe, or is it back on good terms?

[-] Ilandar@aussie.zone 26 points 6 days ago

Safe and official are not the same thing. I'm not sure there is any pirate site that is 100% safe when downloading applications. You are always taking an educated risk based on the history of the site, the moderation, the users and the application in question. It is not a good habit to think of things as clean or unclean, safe or unsafe, because circumstances can always change and you need be actively on the lookout for warning signs.

Commenting so I can follow thread, I have been using 1337 for a good few years and has no idea it got into the bad books.

~~As far as I can recall, EMPRESS called them out for linking malware to her crack releases. Please someone correct me about its details as I don't fully remember it.~~

Edit: Looked it up, there was a torrent with a bitcoin miner injected that 1337 mods appearently didnt remove which caused the whole ordeal.

1337x.to is generally fine to use, just be sure to check the notes on the Megathread and use your common sense.

Context

  • When signing up on the 1337x platform, it's crucial to bear in mind that it's accessible to all users.
  • The act of downloading movies and TV shows is often regarded as safe. This is primarily because these files do not come in .exe format, thus reducing the likelihood of virus infection.

Risk

  • It's highly advisable to be careful when downloading games and software from the site unless you have total confidence in the uploader's trustworthiness. Avoid uploaders like IGGGames due to their notorious track record of distributing malware.
  • Opt for reputable uploaders like DODI Repacks, FitGirl Repacks, and KaOsKrew to ensure reliable content and mitigate any potential risks associated with unverified sources.

What I'm referring to is the Baldur's Gate 3 fiasco. I don't know how things panned out, but people were turning away from it at the time. Admins were aware/involved as far as I ~~know~~ remember.

All software from torrent sites should be treated with a wary eye.

[-] mariusafa@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 1 week ago

1337x is good. Open it with tor and get rid of all the shit. Then get the magnet.

[-] Artyom@lemm.ee 4 points 6 days ago

1337x is known to host some game cracks with malicious bitcoin miners built-in. If you don't play cracked games, maybe it's nbd, but it still stands that you shouldn't trust them.

[-] mariusafa@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Haven't found one yet. In general you shouldn't trust any crack. That's why you have to check every game with virustotal and restrict internet acces to all of them. Fitgirl posts her repacks there too.

[-] histic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 days ago

Any public site is bound to have some just download from known safe uploaders and you're fine

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 8 points 1 week ago

I haven't had a problem with it besides the click stealing malware ads that uBlock gets rid of
