Africa must really be a horrible shithole for people to take risks like this just to escape. Maybe it should be under better management.

It's so sad. Decades of european mistreatment led to this instability and nobody bothers. Now most countries are run by corrupt warlords and China is basically buying the continent. The poor people there stumble from mistreatment to mistreatment and everyone who speaks up against it is immediately killed or imprisoned. The sad part is: there is no good solution for all the refugees. Of course Europe could theoretically welcome them in and spend every nickel on integrating all the refugees, but this would also lead to chaos and ultra-right-wing parties rising faster than they already do, which would lead to an even worse state for everyone. The climate crisis hasn't even started, this will increase the refugees by a lot :(

The mistreatment goes back 100 years+. Climate change is hitting the region too, so yet another Western 'gift'. That said - warning: unpopular opinion! - they could help by having fewer children. Too many north African and Middle Eastern countries are way above what is sustainable, so quality of life is crashing as they fight for what few resources they have.

But they need the children since it's their only life insurance. If there would be social care in these regions, child birth would go down as it did in all first-world societies. With the current state its not possible, because not having children would mean you starve to death as soon as you get sick because nobody can take care of the lifestock

Sucks when you buy the trafficker’s lies about an easy voyage, everything being taken care of and a Mercedes waiting for you.

Lack of education and internet access are to blame

African and Asian countries gained independence at more or less the same timeframe. The difference in where they are now is striking though.

"independence" they are still under the economic boot of the west.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The body of a newborn baby has been recovered from a boat carrying migrants during a rescue operation off the Italian island of Lampedusa.

European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen is due to visit the island on Sunday after Italy asked for EU help.

Italian newspaper Corriere Del Mezzogiorno reports the mother was helped by companions on the small boat after she started having contractions.

Earlier this week a five-month-old baby boy drowned during a rescue operation off the same island, after a boat carrying migrants across the sea from north Africa capsized.

Ms Meloni is pushing for a European Union naval blockade to prevent boats from crossing the Mediterranean to reach Italian shores.

The surge in arrivals led to protests by Lampedusa's residents on Saturday who demonstrated against plans to build a new tent camp to host the migrants.
